Sanjay Dutt’s Untold Tale How Mahesh Bhatt Made Him A Star!

The dynamic Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt will be celebrating his 55 birthday at Yerawada prison in Pune. While the film industry is desperately yearning Sanju Baba’s (Sanjay Dutt fondly called) early release from the jail, Raaga.Com wishes the actor birthday greeting and hope he soon begins shooting and bounces back on silver screen.

Listen to Sanjay Dutt Songs on Raaga.com

Though Sanjay made his debut with Sunil Dutt’s home production ROCKY, yet it was Mahesh Bhatt’s NAAM, that established Sanjay Dutt as an actor to reckon.

Mahesh Bhatt, in an interview recalled how it was a daunting task to extract the actor in Sanjay Dutt, who was a victim of drugs and was booted out by the film industry in his earlier movies as a wooden actor.

Mahesh Bhatt remembers, “After Sunil Dutt Sahab had brought out Sanju Baba of his drug addiction by treatment in the U.S. Sanjay was a changed man but unfortunately the film industry had written him off as a flop actor and there were no takers for him!”

Listen to Sanjay Dutt Songs on Raaga.com

He adds, “Readers would be surprised to know that when I decided to take up the direction of NAAM, which was produced by Rajendra Kumar, film industry mocked at me for taking a flop actor. In fact even Sunil Dutt, had reservation about me as a director.” He added, “Dutt Sahab was over protective of his son and did not wish to let Sanjay work in outside banner. But I had seen a fire in Sanjay and I knew I could bring out a good actor in Sanjay.”

He continues, “After few meetings Sunil Dutt sahab was convinced and he gave the green signal. Now it was for me to take the challenge. I knew a little mentoring and a little structural support from the script were all it would take to get an effective performance out of him. Thus Salim Khan’s (of Salim Javed) excellent script helped me in polishing the rough edges of Sanjay Dutt. As for Sanju, he gave everything to the film - he was single-minded, as focused as a horse with blinkers, he just did not see anything beyond the movie. The result the movie was a huge hit. It celebrated golden jubilee and Sanjay became a Star!”

Emraan Hashmi Back At ‘Kissing Business!’

Emraan Hashmi is back at his best yet again. Yes you have guessed it right. The actor, known for his bold and intimate physical scenes in Bollywood is back at kissing business, which has fetched him the title of 'serial kisser' of B-Town. The actor has the record of kissing 28 heroines in Bollywood.

Interestingly Emraan Hashmi, who in a TV interview had confessed that he is sick and tired of kissing and has been urging filmmakers to desist him from doing such scenes has been yet again compelled to do kiss scenes.

Listen to Emraan Hashmi Songs on Raaga.com

Thus the actor will be seen kissing his heroines yet again on screen. Paksitani actress Humaima Malick is his 29th actress to be kissed in his upcoming movie Raja Natwarlal. While Sandra Amy, the Tamil TV and film actress, will be the 30th actress whom Hashmi would be smooching in an untitled film.

Though Hashmi has reservations of doing kiss scenes but he agrees that film buffs do anticipate a kissing scene from him. In an interview he said, “I remember watching TUM MILE in a theatre, and the person sitting next to me was wondering why I did not kiss Soha Ali Khan in a particular scene. Thus I agree that actors are labeled with certain tags like Salman Khan is synonymous with removing his shirt or Amitabh Bachchan in his hey days was synonymous with action.”

Ironically Emraan Hashmi wishes to give up his tag of 'serial kisser' to his cousin and actor Alia Bhatt. Speaking to media, he said, "I would be happy to pass my 'serial kisser' tag to my cousin Alia. But I want to monopolise the crown. Someone has to reach up to my run rate. So it will take time for the new actors to be there.”

He added, “Dhanush deserves kudos because he has acted opposite Amitabh Bachchan with such confidence and buoyancy that it appears as if he has worked with Amitji intimately for years. All their scenes in the film together are amazing because they are done with authority and excellence.”

Listen to Dhanush Songs on Raaga.com

Besides R Balki bowled over by Dhanush’s histronics, Bollywood filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, who is recognized for making critically acclaimed movies like BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG, RANG DE BASANTI etc. too is planning to rope in Dhanush in his forthcoming Bollywood movie. Amjad Khan Still Immortal As ‘Gabbar Singh’ - Part II

In the last issue you read how Danny Denzongpa had to decline the role of Gabbar Singh due to his commitment to Firoz Khan’s movie DHARMATMA. Hence Ramesh Sippy was in a fix to find a new actor.

Ramesh Sippy in an interview had said, “After Danny declined the role of Gabbar Singh there was a tug of war between Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra all three vying for the role of Gabbar Singh. However I and the writer pair Salim Javed were of the opinion to cast a new actor who could come as a surprise to the viewers.”

Listen to Amjad Khan Moves Songs on Raaga.com

Amjad Khan recalling his casting in SHOLAY in an interview said, “I was an active theater actor and Salim, (of Salim Javed) was my good friend. We used to pass our time at Prithiv Theatre. Once Salim told me that Ramesh Sippy is making a movie and there is a crucial role for which he is searching a good actor. So he asked me to meet Ramesh Sippy. I met him in his office but he told me that he had finalized Danny for the role. I was disappointed and returned home.”

He continued, “Days passed away and I began concentrating on my theatre, though I kept visiting film producers offices to try my luck in films, but in vain. One day to my delight Salim Khan came to my residence and told me that Danny has declined the role and Ramesh Sippy wished to meet me. Incidentally the same day my wife had labor pain and was rushed to hospital for delivery. But she urged me to go and meet Ramesh Sippy. I went reluctantly on her plea.”

He added, “I cannot forget the day 20 September 1973. It turned out the luckiest day of my life because Ramesh Sippy finalized me for the role of Gabbar Singh in SHOLAY by paying me a handsome signing amount; on the other hand my wife Shehla gave birth to a son, our first child, Shadaab Khan.”

Soha Ali Khan And Kunal Khemu’s Engagement Is Official

Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Khemu’s engagement is now official. Soha got engaged to her longtime beau Kunal Khemu in the city of love, Paris. Sharing her delight with her fans Soha Ali Khan tweeted, "It gives me great happiness to share with you all that Kunal proposed to me in Paris with the most perfect ring in the world and I said yes.”

According to close sources Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Khemu, who were in live –in relation for past many years have the blessing of both the couple’s parents. Soha’s mother Sharmila Tagore and brother Saif Ali Khan along with Kunal Khemu father Ravi Khemu has expressed pleasure at the engagement.

It may be noted that earlier Sharmila Tagore had reservations about Soha’s affair with Kunal but later she accepted him. Reacting to the news Sharmila Tagore told media, “I am quite delighted. At last Soha has paid heed to my advice.” She added, “Prior to taking the crucial decision, Soha took my consent and also informed her sister Saba and elder brother Saif about her engagement.”

Saif Ali Khan, who is busy shooting in London for the movie PHANTOM, told, “I am glad that Soha has finally decided to settle. Regarding Kunal, he is almost our family member and a nice guy.”

Regarding the wedding Saif said, “Though the wedding date is still uncertain but it would be a grand affair, probably at the Pataudi venue, where I and Bebo (Kareena Kapoor) were married.”

Interestingly enough while Saif believes the wedding may be held at Pataudi venue, Sharmila Tagore has declined. Speaking to media she said, “I think the marriage will not be a lavish affair nor will it be held at Pataudi. Instead the marriage will be held at Kunal and Soha’s home in Mumbai and will be low key.

A source close to Kunal told, “Recently Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Khemu were holidaying in London and there were no plans to visit Paris. But during their romantic trip the duo decided to take the vital decision and Kunal decided it to make it memorable by purposing Soha in the romantic city of Paris.”

Amjad Khan Still Immortal As ‘Gabbar Singh’ - Part I

Arey O! Sambha, Kitne Aadmi Thae….

When Gabbar Singh aka Amjad Khan uttered these words on the silver screen the audience went gaga over a villain for the first time more than the hero. 39 years later the aura of Gabbar Singh still continues to hunt film buffs. Even the present generation is mesmerized by his menacing villainy. July 27 marks the death anniversary of this great actor who left for heavenly abode on 27 July 1992 at the age of 51. Raaga.Com pays the legendary actor a humble homage.

Born on 12 November 1940 as Amjad Zakaria Khan in Peshawar during pre independence, Amjad Khan is the son of famous actor Jayant who was a topnotch villain of the 50’s and 60’s.
Listen to Amjad Khan Move Songs on Raaga.com

As a child young Amjad had a penchant for acting and drama. When he was just 4 years old his uncle N.K.Ziri gave him his first break in Bollywood in the film CHAR PAISA. Later at the age of 13 years he had the opportunity to work under the great film maker Raj Kapoor in his movie AB DILLI DUR NAHIN

For those who think Amjad Khan made his debut in SHOLAY, let me correct. In fact prior to SHOLAY, Amjad Khan had begun assisting the legendary filmmaker K Asif, who made MUGHUL-E-AZAM, for his under production movie LOVE AND GOD. Later another great filmmaker Chetan Anand (elder brother of Dev Anand and Vijay Anand) had first spotted him and offered him a role in his movie HINDUSTAN KI KASAM, opposite Raaj Kumar. The movie failed hence when Ramesh Sippy cast him SHOLAY, he decided to lunch him in a big way and hence he was given wide media coverage and introduced officially in SHOLAY.

Amjad Khan in an interview said, “I am blessed to have the opportunity of working under great filmmakers like Chetan Anand in HINDUSTAN KI KASAM and assisting the great film legend K Asif during the making of LOVE AND GOD.”

Readers would be aware that initially actor Danny Denzongpa was offered the coveted role of Gabbar Singh in SHOLAY because he was riding high as the most popular villain thanks to some of his hit movies like KHOTTE SIKKAY, DHUND, CHOR MACHAYE SHOR, 36 GHANTE, KALA SONA etc. However he declined the role as he had committed to filmmaker and dear friend Firoz Khan for his movie DHARMATMA

Later in an interview Danny had candidly confessed, “If I had done SHOLAY then Indian Cinema would have lost a fantastic actor like Amjad Khan.”

Is Bollywood Inspiring Youth For Crime?

Sandesh Baliga, a 31 year youth facing trial for stalking two women in Australia has credited Bollywood movies as his inspiration for the rowdy act.

Defending himself from the charges of pestering women by means of texting, calling and approaching the women excessively after single, chance meetings, he told the Hobart Magistrates Court that he indulged in the act after watching Bollywood movies that preach a woman falls in love after repeated persisting.

Listen to Dhoom Songs on Raaga.com

Sandesh Baliga is not the only youth influenced by the charisma of movies. Readers would be surprised to know that the crime branch of the Delhi Police in the year 2013 uncovered 36 youths, who were inspired by Bollywood movies.

Among the movies that inspired gullible youth to indulge in the crime were DHOOM; SPECIAL 26; BOMBAY TO GOA; KHOSLA KA GHOSLA; MUNNA BHAI MBBS; and OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE.

The movie that inspired maximum youth for committing crime is Yash Chopra’s DHOOM series.

Ravindra Yadav, additional commissioner of police (crime) briefing media said, “As per our record the movie DHOOM inspired about 15 cases. The criminals found the idea of running on bike quite fascinating.” He added, “Wherever DHOOM was released there had been an increased rise in cases of gold chain snatching. In fact before the release of the movie DHOOM, bikes with 100cc engines were used, but after the release of the film, engines of 150-200cc came in the market and became the hot favourites of the criminals."

Ravindra Yadav added, "Movies are thus becoming manuals for the criminals. Youngsters in lure of becoming rich overnight commit crimes like cheating as shown in the Akshay Kumar starrer movie SPECIAL 26 in which he impersonates a CBI officer.”

Readers would be surprised to know the Delhi police arrested about 14 youths conning people impersonating like Police officers using his fake identities.

BEDTIME SINGING!

Don’t we all love it when our mom sings wonderful songs for us? Haven’t we all just fallen asleep listening to our mother and father singing for us? Especially for babies, we have all seen it how much every kid loves the warmth that the mother gives them and make them fall asleep.

One classic example is ‘Dhooliyile’ from the movie Chinna Thambi which has prabhu and Kushboo in the lead. This song is a perfect lullaby that any mother would love to sing for her child. Another touching, soul rending song is ‘Karuppu nila’ from the movie ‘en aasai machan’ where we see a crying baby being soothed by singing the beautiful song.

Listen to Thalattu Padalgal on Raaga.com

A touching number in the recent era was ‘Aarariraaro’ from the movie Raam. Here although the lyrics goes “…thaye nee kan urangu” …a different adoption in the thalattu genre where we are seeing the child singing a thalattu for the mother. A hit amongst the audience ofcourse, we all were definitely able to relate to this song.

The song ‘Chinna thaayaval’ from the movie thalapathy was the talk of the town when the movie released. A very touchy song sung by S.Janaki, the song is ofcourse an evergreen lullaby in Illayaraja’s music.

Another beautiful lullaby is ‘Andhi nera thendral kaathu’ from the movie Inaindha kaigal that released in the year 1990. The lyrics holds more importance in this song than anything else and makes everyone of us fall in the trap of emotions.

Mannava mannavawalter vetrivel ofcourse is a good bed time listen too, thanks to the soothing tune and the well-penned lyrics. This song did become a hit during its era of release.

The Inimitable Mukesh And Raj Kapoor Jodi - Remembering Mukesh - Part III

Though the NaushadMukesh Jodi did produced hits yet it could not match the ‘magic’ of the inimitable team of R. K. camp that had RajMukeshShankar JaikishenHasrat jaipuri and Shailendra. The five some along with Lata Mangeshkar gave a new dimensions to popular music in Hindi cinema producing milestone creations beginning with BARSAAT (49) till MERA NAAM JOKER (72).

During a period of almost two and a half decade this team raised melodies to dizzy heights, which were seldom touched, thereby engraving the period from 50 to 60’s as the ‘Golden Phase’ of Hindi film music.

Listen to Mukesh Songs on Raaga.com

However readers would be rather surprised to know that initially Mukesh wanted to become hero rather than a singer but Raj Kapoor convinced him to sing. Mukesh agreed and the songs of BARSAAT were hits. However despite success as a singer Mukesh had the bug of acting and hence in AAH, Raj Kapoor gave Mukesh a brief appearance as the coachman who sings Chhoti si ye zidagaani… But the movie failed. Further when Mukesh’s two more movies MASHUQA and ANURAG failed, he realized he was not fit to be an actor.

The Raj KapoorMukesh jodi became so famous that it is termed as the alliance made in heaven. From AAG –‘ Zinda hoon is tarah…’ to ‘Ek din bik jayega mati ke mol…’ in DHARAM KARAM, Mukesh remained the ‘voice of Raj Kapoor’. On Mukesh’s death, Raj Kapoor had lamented “Today, my body remains, my soul is no more.” A perfect tribute because when one think of Raj Kapoor, we think of Awara hun, Mera joota hai japani, Ruk ja o janewali ruk ja, Chhalia mera naam, Mera naam Raju gharana a-naam, and countless other Mukesh songs lip-synched by Raj Kapur on the screen.

Mukesh won the prestigious Filmfare Award four times for ‘Suhana safar…’ (Madhumati), ‘Nain hamare…’ (Annadata), ‘Kahin door jab din dhal…(Anand) and ‘kai baar yunhi dekha hain…’ (Rajnigandha) for which he also won his first National Award.

Mukesh died on 27th August, 1976. Film lyrist and an intimate pal of Mukesh , Hasrat Jaipuri, in his condolence wrote :

Jo nahi milti kisi bhi saaz mein, Aaise khoobi thi teri awaaz mein

NEE ROMBA ‘AZHAGA’ IRUKE

‘Azhagu’ is one of the most precious words used in Tamil. We usually call someone beautiful when their features appeal to us or even if their character is very pleasant and touch our heart. ‘Azhagu’ is one word that describes the feeling of ‘beauty’ in altogether a superlative manner. Usually what we see is that the man addressing his lady love as ‘azhagu’ – an epitome for beauty. Today we take a look at songs that begin with the word ‘azhagu’ and we understand the various connotations it gives us.

Listen to Azhagu Songs on Raaga.com

A wonderful song is ‘Azhage azhagu devadhai’ from Rajapaarvai. The lyrics speak for itself where the lady is described in a wonderful manner comparing her to an angel. With Kannadasan having penned down the lyrics and K.J.Yesdass having sung the song, we could not have asked for a better melody. Recently ‘Azhago azhagu’ was seen in the movie Sarvam for which Naresh Iyer has lent his voice. The song describes yet again the lady, and especially in this song the man describes each and every feature of hers – her eyes, the way she talks etc.

Talking about description of women and their azhagu a wonderful example is ‘Azhagaana ponnuthan’ from the movie Alibabavum Naapadhu Thirudargalum. Here the exceptional part is that the girl is seen as the lead singing the song and there is scope for self-description. The song ‘Azhagaana rakshasiye’ from the movie Mudhalvan is another brilliant number, a wonderful duet where there a lot of teasing involved, the man comparing the lady to a devil but infact calling her a ‘Beautiful’ devil! ‘Azhagiya Asura’ sung by Anita is a beautiful number where for once we see the girl addressing the male in a romantic manner, and just like seen before, here she calls him a devil too, ofcourse in a romantic manner.

Manoj Kumar Turns 77

Manoj Kumar is better known as ‘Bharat’ in film industry for his passion for patriotic movies and playing the character by the same name in umpteen movies. Remember movies like UPKAAR, PURAB AUR PASCHIM, ROTI KAPDA AUR MAKAAN. Besides patriotic movies Manoj Kumar did many entertaining movies too and the list is long WOH KAUN THI, PATTHAR KE SANAM, DO BADAN, NEELKAMAL, HIMALAYA KI GOD MEIN, GUMNAAM etc but somehow it was his patriotic image that has etched in the minds of film buffs.

Listen to Manoj Kumar Songs on Raaga.com

On July 24 Manoj Kumar would turn 77, Raaga.Com wishes him many returns of the day and best regards for his upcoming movie on freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad.

Born as Harikishen Goswami, little Manoj Kumar adored Dilip Kumar and freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Call it destiny that when he became a celebrity he fulfilled both his ambition. He worked with his idol Dilip Kumar in two movies AADMI and KRANTI and as for freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, he penned a script on the legendary freedom fighter and himself portrayed Bhagat Singh in the movie SHAHEED

His initial years in Bollywood were full of struggle as to survive he even played a role of a 90-year-old beggar in a movie called FASHION, when his actual age was just nineteen years! That’s not all he even did ghost writing as he was a capable writer himself.

Listen to Manoj Kumar Songs on Raaga.com

He first got his major break in a movie called KAANCH KI GUDIA, 1960 followed by few more unnoticeable movies but the movie that made him a star was Vijay Bhatt’s super hit movie HARIYALI AUR RASTA opposite the then hit actress Mala Sinha. Soon movies like HIMALAY KI GODH MEIN, WOH KAUN THI, DO BADAN, PATHER KE SANAM etc earned him good audience appreciation as the ‘Chocolate Romantic Hero’.

However more than acting it was his brilliance in writing and direction that he won real stardom. With his home production UPKAAR in 1967, he proved his excellence in filmmaking. The movie won six Filmfare awards out which Manoj Kumar won four as Best Movie Award, Best Director Award, Best Story award and Best Dialogue award. He also won National Award for best film.

Besides patriotic movies he also tackled social issue with same intensity, his movie SHOR and ROTI KAPDA AUR MAKAN are the best example.

Anil Biswas Recalls How He Coaxed Mukesh To Sing The Hit Song Dil Jalta Hai - Part II

In the last issue you read how Mukesh won recognition with the super hit song Dil jalta hai… however few are aware that Mukesh had earlier declined to sing the song as he was reluctant to become a singer and aspired to be a hero.

Read an interesting first hand encounter of music legend Anil Biswas and how he coaxed Mukesh to sing the super hit song Dil jalta hai… that made him a star singer!

Listen to Mukesh Songs on Raaga.com

Anil Biswas once narrated this interesting anecdote. He said, “One day famous actor Motilal brought a young and handsome youth to my studio. He introduced the handsome gentlemen as Mukesh Chand Mathur, his cousin. He told me that the Mukesh was a good singer and idolizes K.L.Saigal, the great singer of the 40’s. So I asked Mukesh to display his skills. He closed his eyes and sang the classic K.L. Saigal number Jab dil hi toot gaya….I was left stunned listening to the young man’s voice because he had imitated K.L. Saigal to perfection. I immediately asked him to begin training under me from the next day. He nodded and the two left.

Next day I anticipated Mukesh to come to my studio, however to my dismay he did not turn up. Days passed on and my anticipation turned in to anger. After a week I rang up Motilal and expressed my agony. Motilal understood my annoyance and assured me to bring Mukesh to the office next day.

Next morning as I sat composing a song with my musicians, I saw Motilal coming alone to my studio. I was extremely aggravated at Mukesh’s absence. Motilal pacified me and told me that Mukesh has refused to become a singer and insists on becoming an actor. I was distressed because I knew Mukesh was destined to become a singer and not an actor.

I was very angry and stormed into the bar where Mukesh used to usually drink in the evening. When Mukesh saw me he promised to come back the next day and sing the song but I had lost faith in him. Hence I took him to the studio and gave a shower to bring him to his senses. Peeved at my stern attitude Mukesh pleaded, ‘Anilda, pardon me I will sing tomorrow. But I said, “I don’t know anything you will sing today and now!”

Anil Biswas laughed and said if I had not acted tough the world of music would not have been blessed by a singer like Mukesh.
