Independence Day Special - Bollywood films that presented Patriotism with a difference

From ‘Bharat Kumar’ aka Manoj Kumar to present day movie maverick Rajkumar Hirani, almost every second filmmakers has experimented with the age old formula of ‘Patriotism’ in Bollywood. On this Independence Day Raaga.Com picks top 3 Bollywood films that depicted patriotism with difference

Debutant filmmaker Neeraj Pandey deserves kudos for portraying the topic of patriotism with a difference. Unlike movies depicting foreign nationalist or terrorist creating trouble in India, the movie depicted how a simple and earthy common in his 60’s shakes the police machinery and gets the culprits of terror 7/11 attack in Mumbai eliminated using his brilliance.

The movie showcased that India was no longer willing to be at the mercy of a hapless government. Both Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher played their roles brilliantly.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s RANG DE BASANTI shall go down in the annals of Indian cinema as a patriotic movie par excellence.

In the age of computer and technology Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra presented the historic tale of Bhagat Singh, the young revolutionary who was hanged by the British at the age of 23,

What made the movie different was Mehra’s excellent script that drew parallels with the atrocities and vices of British government with that of prevailing democratic government in modern India.

Based on the true story of India’s hockey captain Mir Ranjan Negi who was accused of favoring win to Pakistan team because he was a Muslim, the movie depicted when it comes to sport patriotism takes over emotions and religion takes a backseat.

Shah Rukh Khan played the role of Mir Ranjan Negi, who after being disgraced from the Indian hockey on charges of a being a traitor becomes the coach the Indian women’s hockey team and helps them win thus cleaning the blot of a traitor!

Will BROTHERS prove a career booster for Sidharth Malhotra as the film ANAND did for Amitabh Bachchan?

Speculations are rising high as young actor Sidharth Malhotra clashes with the veteran action king Akshay Kumar in this years’ most anticipated action thriller BROTHERS releasing this Friday.

Though Sidharth Malhotra has made his presence felt in Bollywood with hit films like STUDENT OF THE YEAR, EK VILLAIN and HASEE TOH PHASEE yet Karan Johar’s BROTHERS is a life time opportunity because if his performance comes even fifty percent closer to Akshay Kumar than the movie could open doors of stardom for the young actor and the movie could prove what Rajesh Khanna’s hit film ANAND proved for Amitabh Bachchan.

Readers may recall before ANAND Amitabh Bachchan had done many films but it was his emotional and sober character of Babu Moshai opposite the national heartthrob and Indian’s first superstar Rajesh Khanna in ANAND that did the trick.

In an interview Amitabh Bachchan had informed, “When the movie was offered to me by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, I had butterflies in my stomach as Rajesh Khanna was a huge star and to share screen space opposite such an iconic superstar was a hard nut to crack but thanks to Bhaijaan (ace comedian Mehmood loving addressed), who pumped confidence in me and I was able to perform.”

The stupendous success of ANAND not only made Amitabh Bachchan a star overnight but also fetched him the prestigious Filmfare Award as Best supporting actor.

Interestingly like Amitabh Bachchan the upcoming actor Sidharth Malhotra, who plays Akshay Kumar’s younger brother in the film too has candidly confessed that he was anxious before acting opposite Khiladi Kumar.

Sidharth Malhotra during the promotion of the movie said, “I had a different action in EK VILLAIN. When I heard that I will be doing BROTHERS with Akshay sir, I was very nervous and anxious. We have been seeing him doing action from so many years and we loved him... My fear motivated me to do the film and I worked hard for it.”

In fact to get into the skin of the character Sidharth Malhotra even put on 8 kg so that he looks apt in the role of a martial arts fighter.

He says, “My biggest worry was that while Akshay sir is a martial arts expert how I could match his action skills. But thanks to my fitness trainer and my utter dedication that I was able to develop the kind of body desired for role having flexibility and athletic.”

BROTHERS starring Akshay Kumar, Sidharth Malhotra, Jacqueline Fernandez and Jackie Shroff in key roles, is releasing on August 14th!

Let’s wait and watch can Sidharth Malhotra prove a challenge to Akshay Kumar?
