The softer side of the dark ‘Gabbar Singh’ aka Amjad Khan

With the dark and the villainous character of Gabbar Singh in Amitabh Bachchan’s super hit film SHOLAY, legendary actor Amjad Khan become famous as the loveable wicket man on Indian Screen.

In the mid 70’s when eminent villains like Danny, Ajit, Premnath, Prem Chopra, Jeevan, etc were ruling the roost suddenly with SHOLAY, Amjad Khan became a star villain overnight throwing many famous villains out of job.

With Amitabh Bachchan donning the Superstar cap, Amjad Khan became the Superstar villain and the duo gave hit after hit films like KAALIYA, GANGA KI SAUGANDH, LAAWARIS, MUQADDAR KA SIKANDAR, MR. NATWARLAL, NASSEB…the list is quite long.

However the man with fierce looks, menacing persona and terrifying baritone was a golden man at heart. Recently his son, Shadaab Khan who has turned writer, after his failure as an actor, reveled an interesting anecdote how his father was a kind man at heart.

On the eve of the release of his book ‘Murder in Bollywood’ Shadaab Khan recalled, “I used to generally accompany papa during his shooting. Once on a Saturday morning, when we reached the studio a poor man halted our car at the studio gate and pleaded papa to help him with money for his daughter’s wedding. Papa assured him and asked to meet him on Sunday morning at our residence.”

He continued, “As promised the man came to our residence on Sunday morning but since on Sunday film producers thronged our house to discuss film projects with papa hence the man could not meet him. He waited till late night and went back. Later when papa remembered about him he handed me double the amount promised to the man and asked me to hunt the man and pay him.”

“When I reasoned papa for doubling the amount, he said, ‘I made the man wait double the time he was meant to. So, it’s only fair that I give him twice the amount,” reminisced Shadaab Khan.

BAAHUBALI Writes ‘New Box Office History – Becomes Indian Cinema’s ‘Biggest Hit’ Ever!!

SS Rajamouli's war epic BAAHUBALI has crossed the magical figure of Rs 100 crore in just two days of its release thus making it Biggest hit ever in the annals of Indian Cinema.

To add cherry on the cake SS Rajamouli's sheer hard work has also been rewarded by film critics. According to reports BAAHUBALI has suppressed the Hollywood magnum opus 300 as the IMDB ratings, regarded universally as most trusted and genuine, have rated BAAHUBALI 9.4, whereas '300' scored 7.8

In India too most film critics have given 3.5 to 4 stars to the movie terming it as visual extravaganza, emotionally excellent and entertainment guaranteed.

What is more encroaching for SS Rajamouli is that BAAHUBALI’s word of mouth publicity has gripped films buffs so much that even its Hindi dubbed version has set new records. According to trade reports the Hindi version has crossed Rs.5.15 crore on the first day, making it the highest opening for a dubbed film.

Earlier Rajinikanth-starrer ROBOT had managed to garner Rs.2.2 crore, while Kamal Haasan's 'Vishwaroop' amassed Rs.1.9 crore but BAAHUBALI’s collection is way ahead and with the movie generating fantastic reviews the cinema halls are over flowing.

The mad rush for BAAHUBALI is so enormous that many cinema owners in North India have removed Kangana Ranaut I LOVE NY from screens and are replacing it with BAAHUBALI looking at the mammoth response for its dubbed Hindi version.

In fact many exhibitors feel that BAAHUBALI will also pose a big threat to even Salman Khan’s most anticipated film BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN, scheduled to release next week on the auspicious Eid festival.

Though Salman Khan’s movie releases on Eid have been a boon to him - remember WANTED released on Eid in 2009. Since then Salman Khan has been consistent in delivering Rs 100 crore films on Eid every year like BODYGUARD, DABANGG, EK THA TIGER and KICK, all Eid releases and this year he has BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN, but looking at the unprecedented rush for BAAHUBALI, most film exhibitors predict that they won’t replace BAAHUBALI with Salman’s BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN, if the box office register maintain exceptional business.

A Multiplex chain manager confided, “If BAAHUBALI continues commanding overwhelming business then most cinema owners would continue with BAAHUBALI and in that case Salman’s BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN is likely to suffer business losses as BAJRANGI may not get the number of screens and theatres due to BAAHUBALI occupying most screens!!! .”
