Burman was never taken seriously as a music director by the media and the film awards ceremonies.

Mera Sangeet Hi Pehchan Hai … Gar Yaad Rahe – PART II

As Pancham was the only child of S.D.Burman, his father gave Pancham a solid grounding in music by first making him learn various musical instruments. Thus he mastered tabla under Ustad Samta Prasad, sarod under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and learned the nuance of film music while assisting his father S.D.Burman during the making of many hit movies like CHALTI KA NAAM GAADI (1958), KAAGAZ KE PHOOL (1959), TERE GHAR KE SAMNE (1963), BANDINI (1963), GUIDE (1965) AND TEEN DEVIAN (1965).

He had mastery in playing the mouth organ. If readers can recall the super hit song Hai Apna Dil to Aawara … (SOLVA SAAL), filmed on the superstar of the 50’s Dev Anand in a moving train, they will surely recollect the mouth organ which is the highlight of the song. The mouth organ was played by none other but Pancham

In fact it may come as a stunner to readers that in Rajshri Productions’s super hit movie DOSTI which had two protagonists, a blind boy who has a melodious voice and the other a handicap boy who plays an excellent mouth organ. The backbone of the movie was its magical music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The other vital thing in the movie was the use of spellbinding play of mouth organ. If readers may recall the super hit song Jaanewaalon Zara, Mudke Dekho Mujhe…. (Dosti) music director Laxmikant Pyarelal, were in a fix to select a musician who could play the mouth organ splendidly. After lot of pondering the duo zeroed upon their dear friend Pancham to play the mouth organ. After the recording of the song Laxmikant Pyarelal were so impressed that they requested Pancham to play mouth organ in the entire movie.

While R.D.Burman is fondly called Pancham, few know how he derived his nickname. As Pancham’s father was a distinguished music director, few are aware that Pancham’s mother too was an avid music buff and used to assist her husband. Thus Pancham had imbibed music in his genes. A glimpse of his musical inheritance was visible at his birth. According to family sources when Pancham was born, unlike other children, he cried in melody (sur) with stress on ‘Pa, the fifth notes of Sargam. Hence he was nicknamed Pancham i.e. the fifth note of Sargam.

Listen to RD. Burman on

Pancham is known for his inclination for Western music. But Pancham’s father Burmanda always motivated him to use Indian classical music but Pancham paid no heed. In an interview eminent lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri once said, “Burmanda was against Western music while Pancham had a passion for western music. Hence once Burmanda told me, Majrooh, kindly advice my son Pancham to concentrate on Indian classical music, why is he running after worthless Western music?

When Majrooh tried to persuade R.D.Burman, he politely said, “Majrooh Sahab I do not want to get labeled as a replica of my father but I have to establish my own identity. I know today my music may be criticized and condemned but the future generation will go gaga over my music.”

True words!!! Because today even after 75 years the younger generation and the bygone alike are going gaga over his exceptional music.

NOTE: In the next issue read how R.D.Burman silenced his critics about his lack of Indian Classical music.

Though young Pancham had begun assisting his father in his music, he got his first break as an independent music director accidently. Readers would be amazed to know that Mehmood, the great comedian and filmmaker was making his first movie as a producer CHHOTE NAWAB (1961) and had approached S.D.Burman to compose the music. But Burmanda at that time was at its peak and didn’t entertained new comers. Hence he declined the offer. Mehmood was dejected. He went back home and next day again came to S.D.Burman’s house carrying a bag full of money.

When Burmanda saw Mehmood coming to his house he asked his servant, “Aare, Mehmood phir aaygaaya use ghar se bahar nikalo!” (Mehmood has again come home; throw him out of the house).

When the servants asked Mehmood to move out he daringly entered the house and fuming at Burmanda he said, “Dada agar aap new comers ke saath kaam nahin karte to na kare lekin mein new comers ke saath kaam karta hoon. Mein Pancham ko music director sign karne aaya hoon!” (Dada, if you do not work with new comers than don’t work but I work with new comers. I have come to sign Pancham as my movies director!).

Living up to the expectation of Mehmood, Pancham gave a brilliant score. All the songs of the movie were hits. Particularly the Lata Mangeshkar classical song, Ghar Aaja Ghir Aaye Badara Sanwariya

Celebrating 22 years of Shah Rukh Khan

What made Shah Rukh Khan a Superstar?

Bollywood has seen many megastars in the past, but only four of them had the privilege of being tagged SUPERSTAR. They are Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, who succeeded in making the hearts of millions of cinema buffs go pit-a-pat and win their enduring allegiance. For years they ruled the big screen, entertaining the masses with their talent.

Listen to Shahrukh Khan Songs on
22 years later, when, Shah Rukh Khan is a SUPERSTAR, Raaga.Com analysis what are the factors that made Shah Rukh Khan, the superstar, while his contemporaries like —Aamir Khan and Salman Khan could not achieve the incredible tag of SUPERSTAR!

Superstars are not born every day; they are once-in-blue moon phenomena. In addition, they always have three inherent qualities: they have a hundred percent acting potential; they have a hundred percent star value. And above all, they are destiny’s paranormal prodigies! Only if a performer is aided and abetted by the all the three basic boons, then he can be a SUPERSTAR.

In Aamir’s case, he is more inclined to walk in Raj Kapoor’s steps than be a full-fledged, unrivalled, unequalled high priest of histrionics alone. As for Salman he maybe a successful star, but again like Dev Anand he lacks the quality called histrionics. That leaves only Shahrukh in the game, and Mr. Baazigar knows how to serve and play his cards.

If take a look at the all the qualities of the past SUPERSTARS, we find Shah Rukh Khan, probably possessing all the three in right balance.

First, Shahrukh has incredible range in acting. Just go through the variety of roles he has played. From DARR (1993), BAAZIGAR (1993), DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE (1995), DIL TO PAGAL HAI (1997),) SWADES (2004), CHAK DE! INDIA (2007), DEVDAS (2002) AND MY NAME IS KHAN (2010), DON (2011) his short career graph is dotted with milestones of histrionic achievements, analogous to the all-time greats of the past.

Secondly, Shahrukh has a natural knack for selecting the right script. At least, the roles he played in BAAZIGAR and DARR bear it out amply because, no other young actor would dare touch those roles in the early phase of his career. That’s how Dilip Kumar once used to be. He never hesitated to experiment even with a negative role, as he did in Mehboob’s ANDAZ and AMAR. Again, Rajesh Khanna also never shield away from antihero roles. As a matter of fact, his career took a dramatic turn only after B.R. Chopra’s ITTEFAQ. So did Amitabh in DEEWAAR.

Shahrukh also shares another marked similarity with Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Like them, he too doesn’t mind, if the script wants, him to die in the end. And his death has surely given him a lingering life on screen.

Finally, just like the previous superstars, Shahrukh has never been afraid of competition from his co-stars. On the contrary, most of his co-stars are always in awe of him. Also, all the three superstars preceding him had attained the Numero Uno status within a very short period of their arrival on the scene. Shahrukh’s rise too has been equally brisk. All the ex -superstars had an impressive fan following, mostly from the opposite sex. Shahrukh also happens to be very lucky in this respect. To beat it all, even the most fastidious critics have been kind to Shahrukh and never tire of praising him to the sky, as they once had backed up his predecessors.

As if all this was not enough, Destiny also surely seems to be on Shahrukh’s side because, rarely an artiste from the small screen has made it big on the big screen. Shahrukh has been singularly lucky in this respect as well.

And last but not the least Shah Rukh, like the previous superstars has a boy –next-door simple looks and no godfather to guide him in the industry.

Thus SRK is a lethal combination of a hundred per cent talent for acting, a hundred per cent star-value and, above all, a hundred per cent destiny’s prodigy.
