The eternal friendship of Ravindra Jain and Mohd. Rafi

Tera mera saath rahe... Tera mera saath rahe

Jeete ji, mar ke bhi, haath mein haath rahe

The above super hit song from Rajshri Production’s movie SAUDAGAR suit aptly to describe the friendship of music maestro Ravindra Jain and singing legend Mohd. Rafi

February 28 marks the birthday of the legendary film music director Ravindra Jain. He turns 71 today; Raaga.Com wishes him birthday greeting and recalls the eternal friendship of Ravindra Jain and Mohd Rafi and how they admired each other.

After music legend Naushad, if there is any music director, who has nurtured Indian Classical music, it is indeed, Ravindra Jain. If fact when Ravindra Jain landed in Mumbai, Music director Naushad had offered him to be his assistant but Jain wished to embark his journey as an independent music director.

Student of music stalwarts like Pandit G.L. Jain, Pandit Janardhan Sharma, and Pandit Nathu Ram Jain's inclination towards Bhartiya Shastriya Sangeet was immense and it was his this command over Shastriya Sangeet that brought him close to Mohd. Rafi

Recalling his first meeting with Rafi, Ravindra Jain said, “I first met Rafi-saab in Kolkata in a program but due to his hectic schedule we could not have much conversation but when I got my first Bollywood assignment for the movie LORI, Rafi Sahab was kind enough to sing my debut song “Ye silsila hai pyar ka chalta hi rahega…. However the movie could not be released.”

“Next I was signed by N.N.Sippy for the film KAANCH AUR HEERA. Once again, I approached Rafi sahab and he obliged. The song was Nazar aati nahin manzil….Unfortunately the film didn’t do well, but this song became very popular,” he informs.

He added, “After this N.N.Sippy gave another break with CHOR MACHAYE SHOR. I took the movie as a challenge and yet again I relied on Rafi sahab. Interestingly all the songs became hit. Remember Ek Daal Par Tota Bole...; Paon Mein Dori...”

After this the two shared a good rapport. Paying tribute to Rafi sahab, Ravinder Jain, in his typical poetry quotes -

Nagme Mein Mere Kuchh Bhee Na Thaa

Lekin Aye Rafi Aawaaaz Ne Teree Use Heeraa Banaa Diyaa!

(My songs had nothing special in them but Rafi, your voice turned them into diamonds!)

Rekha’s Charisma leaves Katrina Kaif dazed!

Among the yesteryear actress the only actress who has maintained grace and elegance is unarguably Rekha

Amazed at Rekha’s sophistication and zeal for life Katrina said, “Every time I have met her, I have been amazed by her warmth, her grace and her immense enthusiasm towards life. I am sure we will have a great time filming together and I am looking forward to it."

Termed as ‘Original Diva’ of Bollywood, Rekha is truly an inspiration for everybody. Readers would be surprised to know when Rekha made her debut in the early 70’s in Bollywood, she was severely criticized for her dark complexion and her plump body.

Listen to Rekha Songs on

In an interview Rekha had candidly confessed how media made nasty gags regarding her looks. She once said, “In fact a leading newspaper had even labeled me as ‘Ugly Duckling’ and interestingly later the same newspaper lauded me for my transformation into a beautiful swan!”

Few know that to acquire the stunning looks Rekha underwent strenuous makeover regime which reflected in her personal and professional sphere.

Besides the magical makeover, what makes Rekha’s life a motivation is that despite failures in love life and living a lonesome life, Rekha has not been tucked down instead she lives life king-size.

Her married life is very tragic. In 1990, Rekha married to Delhi based industrialist Mukesh Aggarwal. A year later in 1991, he committed suicide due to financial loss.

Later there were rumored of Rekha’s secretly marriage to Bollywood actor Vinod Mehra but Rekha in an interview with Simi Garewal declined the rumor referring to him as a ‘well-wisher.’ And last but not the least her Rekha ‘s failed affair with Amitabh Bachchan is well known but in spite of all the tragedies Rekha continues to live life positively and that’s the key to her evergreen charisma and allure.

Subhash Ghai bestowed with ‘Visionary of India’ Award

Subhash Ghai, the brilliant filmmaker who gave a new definition to filmmaking in the 80’s and produced multiple commercially successfully movies like KARZ, HERO, RAM LAKHAN, KHAL-NAYAK etc. was recently felicitated with the ‘Visionary of India’ award at the Vision Summit - 2020 by FICCI - ETNOW with NexIndia in Mumbai.

Subhash Ghai was awarded with honor for his immense contributions as an exceptional filmmaker and an educationist, who with his Whistling Woods International Institute has made India into a brand internationally.

Thanks to glamour and glitz associated with Subhash Ghai’s movies, Ghai had won the prestigious title of Showman of Bollywood, after the demise of the original Showman of Bollywood viz. Raj Kapoor

Besides giving Indian Cinema several blockbusters Subhash Ghai also played an important role in reviewing thespian Dilip Kumar’s career in his second inning. Ghai gave Dilip Kumar a new image of ‘Angry Old Man’ with action thrillers like VIDHAATA, KARMA, and SAUDAGAR.

Speaking on the occasion Subhash Ghai regretted that instead of establishing Indian film fraternity as a brand internationally the industry has been divided into Bollywood, Tollywood or Kollywood. He lamented, “We need to build our brand as an India that is original, not an India that apes others. Personally, I feel that it is a matter of shame when we refer to Indian cinema as Bollywood, Tollywood or Kollywood, and the media also mentions it as a brand proudly.”

He added, ‘It is our duty to literate the younger generation about the rich heritage of India and review our nation into a superpower by 2020.”

Though Subhash Ghai made commercial potboilers but from 2003 he started a new division of Mukta Arts, his production company, which encouraged the new era films like JOGGERS' PARK and IQBAL, which won him National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues.

Contemporary filmmaker laud film legend Guru Dutt

Legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt is probably the most adored Bollywood filmmaker of all time. Even today, contemporary filmmakers are inspired by his captivating style of filmmaking and are bowled over by his brilliance in selecting story.

Guru Dutt who made some of the hard-hitting social awakening movies like PYAASA (1957), KAAGAZ KE PHOOL (1960), SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM 91962), was not restricted to social drama instead he proved his mastery in crime thrillers with BAAZI (1951), CID (1956) and his proficiency at comedy in MR AND MRS 55. Hence his films still leave an impression on thinking filmmakers.

Recently at the book release of the screenplay of Guru Dutt’s awe-inspiring films viz. SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM, CHAUDHVIN KA CHAND and KAAGAZ KE PHOOL, prominent filmmakers of today Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Dibakar Banerjee, Farhan Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap shared their experiences how Guru Dutt and his immortal films keep inspiring them.

Listen to The Unforgettable Guru Dutt songs on

Saluting the genius filmmaker Farhan Akhtar said, “I became his devotee after I saw his movie PYAASA. What left me dumbfounded was the significance of the subject. Even today the subject holds sense and the songs like Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye toh kya hai or Jinhe naaz hai hind par who kahan hai compel us to ponder.”

“What makes me admire Guru Dutt is his command in selecting subjects. He was born in a Kannada family yet what is amazing is that he made his movie SAHEB, BIWI AUR GHULAM inspired from Bengali novel. This gives a lesson to new breed of filmmakers to read books for powerful subjects,” said Dibakar Banerjee, famous director and screenwriter, known for films like KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE!

Praising Guru Dutt, Anurag Kashyap said, “Guru Dutt was genius in capturing the scenes on celluloid. He played with light, mood, emotions. His style of narration was quite innovative and path breaking.”

“What made Guru Dutt special was that he never bothered about the box office,” said Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Recalling his conversation with Dev Anand, Chopra said, “Devji informed me that despite KAAGAZ KE PHOOL failure Guru Dutt, was confident and he proved it with the success of his next film CHAUDHVIN KA CHAND (1960)

Is Varun Dhawan the New ‘Angry Man’ In Making?

With the mega success of action thriller BADLAPUR, Varun Dhawan, the recent heart throb of Bollywood has proved that he is not just another celebrity son but is an actor par excellence.

True enough in a short span Varun Dhawan has proved his credential as a power packed actor essaying a verity of roles like the happy go lucky boy in Karan Johar’s STUDENT OF THE YEAR (2012); in MAIN TERA HERO (2014) he played a typical Bollywood hero, who romances and thrashes the baddies while in HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA (2014) he proved his mastery over comedy.

And last but not the least in BADLAPUR (2015) he daringly took the challenging role of the antagonist Raghu and has brilliantly confronted against the acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

In fact the highpoint of BADLAPUR is the on-screen pairing of these two actors and probably one of the prime reasons why the revenge drama is being talk of the town.

Speaking about the confrontation scenes director Sriram Raghavan says, while Nawaz brings an evil humorous streak to his character and adds an ominous shade to his role. Varun gives an equally competent resentment through his wide fiery eyes.

Recalling a confrontation scene in which Varun thrashes Nawaz brutally, Sriram Raghavan recalls, “A scene required Varun to thrash Nawaz viciously but despite being beaten black and blue, Nawaz had to keep laughing, merrily, thus ridiculing Varun.”

“To get into the skin of the role and to generate the fury required for the role, Varun studied the scene for hours and during the shoot he wild so wild that he actually ended by banging Nawaz!”

After BADLAPUR, Varun will be seen again in an action avtar in DISHOOM, directed by brother Rohit Dhawan and would star opposite original action hero John Abraham.

One wonder is Varun Dhawan the ‘New Angry Man’ In Making?

How Vishal Bhardwaj Zeroed Upon Shahid Kapoor in HAIDER?

Shahid Kapoor Birthday Special…

Shahid Kapoor, the ‘Chocolate Hero’, who was discarded by so called critics as a commercial star, capable of just dancing and singing around the tress with beautiful heroines, eventually tight lipped his critics with his powerhouse performance in Vishal Bhardwaj’s HAIDER.

The actor was awarded almost all the top notch awards of the country from the most prestigious and old Fillmare Award to Screen Awards to Stardust Awards, BIG Star Entertainment Awards, Star Guild Awards etc.

Shahid Kapoor turns 34 today; Raaga.Com wishes him many happy returns of the day and recalls how Vishal Bhardwaj zeroed upon him for this coveted role.

Few know that Vishal Bhardwaj’s first choice for the role of HAIDER was his favorite actor Irrfan Khan. So how did Vishal zeroed upon Shahid Kapoor?

In an interview Vishal spilled the beans. He said, “While I was working with Shahid in KAMINEY, I was bowled over by the young actor’s commitment and his dedication for his role hence I decided to take a risk.”

He added, “However I did not give my nod to Shahid just because of his brilliant and acclaimed performance in KAMINEY but I took his screen test, particularly, his mastery over long monologues, which is the backbone of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet.”

He informs, “When I gave Shahid a long monologue to perform I was amazed by his dialogue delivery and was reminded of legendary actors Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapur after listening to Shahid deliver those wordy pieces on my headphones. Thus I made up my mind to give Shahid this complex character and bring out the hidden talent in him.”

Interestingly Shahid Kapoor himself in an interview had candidly confessed, “When I gave the nod to the role of HAIDER, I did not knew the complexity of the character but when I started shooting I felt the weight of the role on me.”

“This was the kind of role Vishal sir would give an actor the level of my father Pankaj Kapur or Irrfan Khan, people with very high caliber. He took a big risk by casting me in it, but he had that confidence and love for me,” he quipped.

The Mystery Behind Madhubala’s death Revealed!

Madhubala, the yesteryear beautiful actress, who bewitched millions of her fans with her million dollar smile in movies like MUGHAL-E-AZAM, BARSAAT KI RAAT, CHALTI KA NAAM GAADI, MAHAL etc. continues to hunt her fans.

23 February marks her death anniversary; Raaga. Com pays her homage and reveals the untold secret that killed her at the young age of 36 years!

Death at the young age of 36 is surely tragic and it is more painful if it happens to a film celebrity who is at the peak of his/her career. Hence when Madhubala died the film industry was taken aback and multiple rumors were circulated for her sudden and untimely demise.

Some film magazines alleged her death to the irrepressible grieve that she underwent due to her failed love affair with her heartthrob thespian Dilip Kumar. Reports claimed after Dilip Kumar kicked Madhubala out of his life and married Saira Banu, Madhubala was heartbroken and in utter melancholy she went into depression.

Listen to Classic Beauty Madhubala songs on

Others media reports claimed Madhubala had died due to the utter hardship that she endured during the shooting of K.Asif’s classic MUGHAL-E AZAM. According to reports K.Asif to explore authenticity had used genuine iron chains for the shooting of the song Bekas Pe Karam Kijiye….the burden of these chains played havoc as the amount of physical exertion made Madhubala weak and pale and ultimately took her life.

However Madhubala’s elder sister Madhur Bhushan turns down all these reports and revealed the real truth about Madhubala’s death in an interview.

She said, “It may stun readers but the fact is that Madhubala lived a life more than she was expected to live because at birth she was detected of Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), a disorder colloquially referred to as a ‘hole in the heart.’”

“What was most disturbing is that when she was born of this disease there was no medication but thankfully she survived and it was only during the shooting of BAHUT DIN HUE (1954) when Madhubala vomited blood on the set doctors came to know about her dreadful disease.”

Luckily by than Dr. Clarence Walt Lillehei, an American surgeon who pioneered open-heart surgery, had operated a baby suffering from VSD successfully,” she informed.

She added, “Hence we took Madhubala to London for treatment but surgeons declined to operate her as the operation was successful only for kids and for adults research was in progress. Thus we returned disappointed and few years later Madhubal bid adieu.”

Youth replicates Amitabh Bachchan’s ANDHA KANOON Courtroom Murder Scene in real life!

Bollywood has been repeatedly alleged for influencing youngsters, who inspire from movies and indulge in crime. Though the allegation has been sidelined advocating that cinema like a coin has two sides, both good and bad. However, recently the allegation turned true when a 17 year old youth, from Muzaffarnagar, carried out revenge of his father in a typical Bollywood style movie.

If readers may have seen Rajnikant, Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan starrer ANDHA KANOON (1983), they would vividly remember the ghastly scene where Amitabh Bachchan brutally kills the villain Amrish Puri in the court room sending chill down the audience seated in the cinema halls. It was first of its kind scene that dared to show killing in a court room. The scene won high acclaim and played a pivotal role in the movie’s success.

Listen to Andhaa Kaanoon songs on

Years later the scene has been replicated by a film buff who shoot dead his father’s killer in the court room taking everybody by surprise.

The youth Sagar Malik, 17, is said to have hatched a revenge plan after his dad, Amitabh, 57, was found dead two years ago. Fuming with anger to avenge his father’s killer, Sagar erroneously killed a man and was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention centre, where he was informed by his fellow inmates that his father had actually been killed by local gangster Vicky Tyagi, (38) and he had wrongly killed his aid. During conversation Sagar also came to know that Vicky Tyagi, was in jail for committing murder of a policeman and would be appearing in the court for trail.

Hence Sagar cleverly escaped from jail, managed to hire a lawyer’s uniform, disguised himself and walked into the courtroom, on the day of trial, in a typical Bollywood movie style. When the accused, Vicky Tyagi, appeared before the court, Sagar pumped 17 bullets into Tyagai, just as Amiatbh Bachchan stabs repeatedly Amrish Puri in ANDHA KANOON

When the police rushed to arrest him, he did not oppose instead he narrated the saga how he the accused had killed his father and he took revenge of the same.

Isn’t all this sound like a potboiler Bollywood film from the 80’s!

Maharashtra CM attracts filmmakers to shoot in Maharashtra to Increase tourism

In order to give shape to the long drawn dream of transforming Mumbai into a global financial hub Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has decided to entice filmmakers to shoot in Maharashtra state, particularly in Mumbai and generate revenue through tourism.

Hence to attract filmmakers Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has decided to scrutinize the loopholes preventing Bollywood filmmakers to shoot in the state. He has also decided to reduce the number of clearance that compels filmmakers to discard shooting in Maharashtra and move outside the state or foreign countries.

Speaking at the Mumbai Next: MMR Transformation Conclave, eminent film and TV producer, Ekta Kapoor and star of millennium Amitabh Bachchan had reasoned why filmmakers overlook Maharashtra for shooting and preferred Delhi, Gujarat or shoot in foreign countries.

Ekta Kapoor had categorically said, “What is most disappointing is that, if a filmmaker has to just erect a set in Mumbai, he has to run from pillar to post to acquire about 146 permissions from the government authorities. In addition the rates charged by the state government are also exorbitant.”

To explicate her point she added, “The average cost of shooting for a day at Mumbai’s Gateway of India is Rs 2.25 lakh, whereas to shoot at the India Gate in Delhi is Rs 1.25 lakh. Hence filmmakers rush to Delhi, rather than Mumbai.”

Valsa Nair Singh, secretary tourism and culture, Government of Maharashtra too enlightened the gathering how Singapore and Dubai have intelligently used entertainment as means to attract tourism and minted money. She informed, “What is paradoxical is that foreign nations like Turkey, Greece and Russia are minting money in tourism through Bollywood!”

Parag Jain Nainuttia, managing director, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), acknowledged about the filmmakers’ complaint regarding permissions for a single shoot in the state. He said, “We would look into to bring down the number of clearances to at par with what is required in other countries and cities.”

Guru Dutt’s Classic Films Complied Into Book

Guess what is common in these classic films DEEWAAR, RAM LAKHAN, PARINDA? Well you have guessed it right they all are inspired by thespian Dilip Kumar’s legendary hit film GANGA JUMNA that depicted the tale of two brothers, one on side of law and other on its opposite. So what made these movies such classic despite plagiarizing the original plot?

The answer lies in their outstanding screenplays that did the trick. In fact according to the highest paid writers of all time Salim Javed, screenplay is the backbone of any film and if the screenplay goes erratic the film falls flat on its face regardless of a strong story.

Listen to Guru Dutt Songs on

Thus paying salute to the style of screenplay writing, eminent filmmaker, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, producer of Aamir Khan’s mega hit PK, has initiated compiling brilliant movie screenplays into ‘book form’ so as to make them easily accessible to students of cinema to learn the nuance and technique of screenplay writing. Chopra introduced this innovative idea in 2009 with his super hit film LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI and then he released the screenplay book of 3 IDIOTS in June 2010.

Moving a step further Vidhu Vinod Chopra has now brought out the screenplay in book forms of Indian Cinema’s greatest filmmaker Guru Dutt. The movies whose screenplay have been complied into book form are Guru Dutt’s classic milestones Viz. SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM, CHAUDHVIN KA CHAND and KAAGAZ KE PHOOL

Speaking to media about the release of these books Vidhu Vinod Chopra in an interview said, "Through the books I pay by humble tribute to the genius filmmaker Guru Dutt for making such motivating and astounding films that still leave us flabbergasted.

“The idea behind compiling legendary movie screenplay in book form is an effort to safeguard the rich inheritance of Indian cinema and to bring fervent students of cinema and film lovers closer to the work of veteran directors,” he added.

The screenplays of the above mentioned Guru Dutt films have been penned by distinguished writers Dinesh Raheja and Jitendra Kothari.

The books are scheduled to be released on 23rd February in Mumbai. The book launch will witness a discussion panel consisting of four contemporary directors Vinod Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee and Anurag Kashyap sharing their experience how they adore Guru Dutt and his craft of making movies.

After 19 years DDLJ bids adieu from Maratha Mandir Theater

The romantic Shah Rukh Khan - Kajol musical DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE better known as DDLJ finally bid adieu from Mumbai’s majestic Maratha Mandir cinema after creating the unbeatable record run by any movie around the world. The movie ran uninterrupted for over 20 years! The only movie that came ‘little’ close to its hurricane record is Amitabh Bachchan’s SHOLAY that run for five years at Mumbai’s Minerva Cinema hall.

On Thursday February 19, 2015 the Management of Maratha Mandir played the last show of DDLJ at 9.15 a.m. thus curtailing the historic 1009 weeks run at the cinema hall.

Listen to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge songs on

The reason behind the movie being removed according to Yash Raj films is that the theatre management had pre-poned the movie’s timing from regular 11.30 a.m. to 9.15 a.m. As result the occupancy of the theatre had reduced drastically compelling the theatre management to remove the movie.

Manoj Desai, Managing Director of Maratha Mandir theatre briefing the media said, “Earlier the movie had 40 to 50 per cent occupancy on weekdays and on the weekend it run for houseful. However post its 1000 weeks run the occupancy has reduced. We have 1105 seats in one screen and out of which hardly 100 to 200 seats used to get occupied so it doesn't made sense to run it any longer."

He added, “To add salt to injury the tickets for DDLJ were sold at Rs 20, Rs 17 and Rs 15 - much cheaper than the prices charged by multiplexes hence it was inevitable to stop the screening.”

Readers may recall on December 12, 2014, DDLJ completed 1000 weeks at the cinema and it was celebrated with great gusto with its lead actors Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol (despite injury in her leg) present at the theatre to celebrate the memorable occasion.

Are Irrfan Khan And Nawazuddin Siddiqui; Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan of Today?

Irrfan Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui come from National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi, where acting is given more preference over looks and style. Hence both had to struggle a lot to make their presence felt in Bollywood.

While Irrfan Khan today is an established actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is making waves thanks to the recent success of his film KICK opposite superstar Salman Khan and rave reviews that he is getting for his villainy in BADLAPUR opposite Varun Dhawan.

Interestingly the two actors worked together in the critically acclaimed film LUNCHBOX and what’s fascinating is that Nawazuddin Siddiqui out beat Irrfan Khan by winning the Best Supporting actor Filmfare Award, while Irrfan left home empty handed.

Thus ever since Nawazuddin Siddiqui has tasted stardom, Irrfan is having a complex. A picture of this complexity was recently visible at the press conference of Irrfan Khan’s upcoming film, QISSA. During the press conference when some reporters consistently quizzed Irrfan to share his experience working with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in LUNCHBOX, Irrfan Khan got aggravated and walked out leaving the media blank.

A similar cold war was witnessed in the early 70’s when Rajesh Khanna was the superstar and the struggling new comer Amiatbh Bachchan was trying to make his place in Bollywood. The two came face to face in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ANAND and surprisingly Bachchan gave a tough confrontation and won both critics and movie buff’s acclaim.

What’s more just as Nawazuddin Siddiqui won Filmfare award for Best Supporting actor in LUNCHBOX likewise Amiatbh Bachchan won Best Supporting actor in ANAND thus fuming Rajesh Khanna to no limits.

What added salt to Khanna’s injuries was that in their next film NAMAK HARAM, where the two actors once again shared the screen, Amitabh Bachchan, yet again out beat Khanna and won the Filmfare Best Supporting actor award!!

After this the two never shared screen together, while Rajesh Khanna’s ego took him to his downfall, Amitabh Bachchan’s talent made him the superstar!

One hopes Irrfan Khan learns a lesson!

‘Movie Mogul’ D Ramanaidu No More!

Movie Mogul D Ramanaidu, eminent film producer, who held the rare Guinness Book of World Records of producing over 150 films in 13 Indian languages bid adieu on Wednesday.
