BAAHUBALI and BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN lose battle for Oscar; Marathi film COURT selected amidst ‘rift’ in jury members!!

Sidelining commercial successfully films like BAAHUBALI, BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN, PK, MARY KOM and artistically brilliant art films like MASAAN, HAIDER, KAAKA MUTTAI, AKUTTRAM KADITHAL etc. the Film Federation of India (FFI) jury gave its thumps up to Chaitanya Tamhane's debut Marathi movie COURT, as India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 88th Academy Awards.

Though the decision to select the Marathi film COURT is cited as a unanimous decision by the jury but eminent filmmaker Rahul Rawail, who was one of the jury in the panel has dropped a bomb shell by quitting from the post citing differences with Chairperson Amol Palekar.

It seems Rahul Rawail is unhappy with decision of selecting the Marathi film COURT as in a tweet he has accused Amol Palekar’s behavior as obnoxious and quoted the reason for resigning from the Film Federation of India (FFI) jury.

It may be noted eminent filmmaker Rahul Rawail is a celebrated filmmaker and has to his credits hit films like LOVE STORY, BETAAB, ARJUN etc.

Though Amol Palekar has not responded to Rahul Rawail’s allegation but Supran Sen, secretary general of Film Federation of India (FFI), which selects the Oscar entry, termed Rawail’s claims ‘ridiculous’. In a press release she said, “The film COURT was a unanimous decision. You can manipulate one or two people not all the members of the jury. I think they had a personal problem and it does not have to do with COURT. Rahul Rawail’s statement is ridiculous.”

The selection of Marathi film COURT is bound to raise eye brows because Amol Palekar, the Chairman of Film Federation of India (FFI), being a Maharashtrian, was sure to support the film from his state.

What is painful is that it is this very attitude of us Indians to favor our states that has resulted in India never being able to win an Oscar despite having quality filmmakers. Instead of focusing on the quality of a film, irrespective of its language and state, the jury of Film Federation of India (FFI) has always been interested in favoritism.

Until we overcome this drawback, we can never think of winning an Oscar!!!

Can Kollywood Superstar Vijay’s PULI outscore Bollywood’s Mega Star Akshay Kumar SINGH IS BLIING?

With Bollywood’s top notch producer Pahlaj Nihalani purchasing the pan-India rights for the Hindi dubbed version of Tamil superstar Vijay’s fantasy adventure drama PULI there are speculations that the Hindi dubbed version may give a tough fight to Akshay Kumar’s comedy film SINGH IS BLIING when the two film release this week simultaneously.

Pahlaj Nihalani is an experienced film producer and knows the pulse of the audience. A picture of his intellect can be gauged from the string of super hits Bollywood blockbusters that he has produced over the years like AANKHEN, SHOLA AUR SHABNAM, AAG HI AAG, ANDAZ etc.

Confident of PULI’s success Pahlaj Nihalani says, “I am quite convinced about the success of PULI because the film is targeted at both the kids and grownups. Secondly after the spectacular success of BAHUBALI, there is a huge hunger among audience for fantasy adventure films.”

Pahlaj Nihalani’s son Chinni Nihalani informed, “We would be releasing the film in nearly 2,000 screens. All the versions of the film will have a simultaneous release on October 1.”

Asked about the competition of the film with Akshay Kumar’s comedy film SINGH IS BLIING he said, “I don’t think PULI will have a threat from Akshay’s movie because both the movies are on diverse subjects. In addition both the movies enjoy the advantage of a long weekend holiday hence both the films must to good business.”

Coming to the star appeal of South superstar Vijay and Bollywood Action King Akshay Kumar, it is obvious that Vijay will have a spell bounding draw in Southern states and foreign countries where he has a huge fan following but will he make an impact in Northern India is a big question.

However thanks to the presence of Sridevi, the movie is sure to make a fantastic opening in Northern states too.

As regards Akshay Kumar he is sure to pull in audience as the movie is sequel to his early hit SINGH IS KING. Hence the brand value will attract the film buffs but on the negative side the movies trailer looks like a series of jokes patched together and also gives you a massive SINGH IS KING hangover.

So readers who do you think will have the big draw? Kollywood Superstar Vijay’s PULI or Bollywood’s Mega Star Akshay Kumar’s SINGH IS KING???
