How Mehul Kumar Created Casting Coup With Raaj Kumar And Nana Patekar!

If Ramesh Sippy created a casting coup by casting two titians of Indian cinema Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan in the movie SHAKTI, likewise eminent filmmaker Mehul Kumar created ripples in the industry after he announced the casting of Indian cinema’s two most eccentric actors - Raaj Kumar and Nana Patekar in his movie TIRANGAA.

Recalling the making of the movie Mehul Kumar in an interview has said, “When I announced the casting of Raaj Kumar and Nana Patekar, the media went berserk and I was written off. A national media wrote Mehul Kumar has dug his own grave by casting the two hot headed actors!” He informed, “Another Hindi daily wrote, “Pata nahin yeh tiranga lehrayega bhi ki nahin…” (I doubt if this Tiranga will ever fly! In addition even the industry seniors were against my choice but I was undeterred.” 

He adds, “When I had signed Raaj Kumar sahab for my movie MARTE DAM TAK (1987) I was terrified similarly by the industry people but when I approached Raaj Kumar sahab with the script he was very kind to me and nodded without any fuss, though I had no big hits under my belt in Bollywood. Thus working with Raaj Kumar sahab was not a problem for me.”

He continues, “As regards Nana Patekar, when I narrated the script to him and informed him that I had signed Raaj Kumar opposite him, he was overwhelmed. His only worry was there should not be any interference in the script, before I could assure Nana Patekar, Raaj Kumar guaranteed him that there would no interference. 

Readers would be surprised to know that Mehul Kumar completed TIRANGAA in six months time.

Raaga.Com reveals the identity of this genius to the readers. He is Vidyadhar Bhatte, a makeup artist who has been serving Bollywood since forty years but is still anonymous. 


Vidyadhar Bhatte made his debut in 1974 and has been a favorite makeup artist of many legendary actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar, Aamir Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Aditya Chopra, Rani Mukherji, Vidya Balan and many more. He is one the few makeup artists who introduced prosthetics and other techniques.

Informing about prosthetic make-up, Vidyadhar Bhatte said that prosthetic make-up was ‘First’ used in India on the versatile actor Sanjeev Kumar in the movie CHEHRE PE CHEHRA (1981),

Readers may have heard the famous song Man Dole Mera Tan…. from Vyjantimala and Pradeep Kumar starrer NAGIN (1954). The highlight of the song is the ‘Been Music’ played by snake charmers. However readers would be stunned to know that the music was produced by a young musician called Kalyanji Virji Shah, who was assisting music director Hemant Kumar in the movie.

Recalling the song eminent music director Hemant Kumar in a radio interview said, “Kalyanji Virji Shah and his younger brother Anandji was my assistant. The duo was very intelligent and kept innovating music. During the making of the movie NAGIN, I had a tough challenge to produce the Bean effect that was produced by road side snake chambers to charm the snakes. As the Bean Music was the back bone of the movie I wanted to produce it as authentic as possible but despite using several instruments I was unable to produce the right effect. Hence I was in a bit dilemma.”

He continued, “One day to my surprise I heard the same music in my room being played by an electronic instrument by my assistant Kalyanji Virji Shah. Listening to the music I was overjoyed and hugged Kalyanji. Later Kalyanji informed me that the instrument was called Clavioline, which he has imported from foreign country at a whopping price.”
