What was yesteryear actress Nargis’s untold ambition?

Duniya Mein Hum Aaye Hain To Jeena Hi Padega

Jeevan Hai Agar Zehar To Peena Hi Padega…..

(If we have come to the world then we have to live

If our life is poison so we have to drink it)

Remember this super hit song from Mehboob Khan 50’s classic MOTHER INDIA, staring Nagris, the great legendary actress, who lived the role to the fullest.

June 1 marks the birth anniversary of Nargis, who ruled the 50’s and the 60’s as the ‘Numero Uno’ actress of Bollywood. Remember her hit films ANDAZ (1949), AWAARA (1951), DEEDAR (1951), SHREE 420 (1955), CHORI CHORI (1956), LAJWANTI (1958), ADALAT (1958) and of course MOTHER INDIA (1957), with which she became immortal in the annals of Indian cinema winning highest accolades and multiple awards.

Raaga.Com pays homage to her and recalls the other side of her life and her untold ambition.

Nargis besides being the top actress of the Golden Era in Bollywood was wife of eminent film actor turned politician Sunil Dutt and mother of superstar Sanjay Dutt.

While all aware that she was the most selling actress and shared a great chemistry with actor cum filmmaker Raj Kapoor in the 50’ and 60’; few know the other said of her ‘real’ life.

Sunil Dutt in an interview revealed that Nargis never wanted to become an actress but instead she wanted to become a doctor.

He said, “Unlike other children who aspire to become doctor due to the lure of huge money in the profession, Nargis wanted to become a doctor to fulfill the unfulfilled dream of his father. Her father Mohan Babu, never achieved his goal of becoming a doctor hence Nargis aspired to accomplish her father’s desire.”

He added, “But when her mother Jaddanbai, a thumri singer introduced her into films she became an actress but always had a soft care for patients and even as a big star, she always used to go to hospitals, especially cancer hospitals, to take care of the patients and meet them and meet the doctors.".

It was ironic that when Nargis herself was stricken with cancer, the medical profession could do nothing to save her But as per the song of MOTHER INDIA…

Zinda Hai Jo Izzat Se Woh Izzat Se Marega

(The person who is alive with respect dies with respect)

Hence on May 3, 1981 Nargis breathed her last with dignity and bid adieu from this world.

Wanna guess what Kangana Ranaut shares in common with Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha?

Wanna guess what is common between rising star Kangana Ranaut and the top notch Bollywood veteran stars Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha?

Well besides possessing their kind of versatility and histrionics Kangana Ranaut has one more thing common which she recently revealed in an interview. Speaking to a leading national daily Kangana expressed how the media had distorted her name; a common concern shared by the legendary actors Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha, when they made their debut in Bollywood?

On a question posed to her that how does she react when the media terms her as ‘Female Khan’ or ‘Mini Khan’, Kangana retorted, “The media has already distorted my surname earlier from Ranaut to 'Ranawat'. As a result my father pestered me a lot.”

She added, “When I did tried to correct the surname, then the media started referring me as 'Raut', this irritated my grandfather and he called me and blasted, "You have gone there and ruined our name."

Similarly when Amiatbh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha made their debut in Bollywood their names were radical names and unheard. Hence both Bachchan and Sinha had to face the burn.

Amitabh Bachchan in his blog informs, “I had trouble with my name initially because it was odd for people to either pronounce or spell it. My name Amitabh was unusual for most parts of the country and people would address me as Amitav or Amitava or Amitabho but gradually with my success the name became familiar.”

Shatrughan Sinha, who’s real was Shatrughan Prasad Sinha, was advised to change his name. He changed to S.P. Sinha and worked in few films but the name sounded like a police officer hence he reverted back to Shatrughan Sinha, (dropping Prasad) but as predicted his name proved a hurdle in his career. Being a tongue twister his name was distorted as some called him Shatyganj, Shatrudhan, Shatrubin etc. Finally popular film magazine Stardust coined him a new name ‘Shot Gun’ till date he is popular with this tag name!

Should film stars be accountable for misleading advertisements?

Dancing sensation and popularly recognized as ‘Dhak Dhak Girl’ Madhuri Dixit is in a web of trouble as FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has served her a legal notice for endorsing the popular food brand Maggi.

It may be noted Madhuri Dixit is the brand ambassador of Maggi and seen in TV commercial promoting the product as nutritive food for kids. However, after Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration found high levels of lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG), contain in it they have served Ms. Dixit a legal notice seeking Ms. Dixit to reply why she endorsed the product without properly investigating the legitimacy of the product.

But Ms. Dixit is not the only actress to come under the scanner earlier superstar Shah Rukh Khan too was in trouble, for endorsing the fairness cream 'Fair and Handsome' by eminent actress Nandita Das.

Nandita Das, herself dark in complexion made mockery of such advertisements and has been campaigning to change the mindsets of the color-conscious people of the county. She says, “I feel embarrassed how I am always referred by my skin color as the 'dusky' or 'earthy' actress by even by the best of journalists.”

Hence as a protest she urged Emami to take down the Fair and Handsome ad and focus on promoting healthy skin.

But the question is should film stars should be accountable for such misleading advertisements?

Well frankly speaking yes because as per famous poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said, “Fame is proof that people are gullible.”

His words have a certain resonance in following the appearance of certain celebrities in dubious commercials. Hence we have to draw the line under those among the rich and famous who abuse their celebrity to help advertisers make fools of us, the customers.

The ‘Real Reason’ behind Rekha’s Exit in FITOOR Revealed!!

The news of veteran actress Rekha walking out of Abhishek Kapoor's most ambitious film FITOOR has left not only Rekha’s fan surprised but even the media is rife with multiple stories circulating.

Some speculate Rekha made the exit on her own after being disappointed by her character of Miss Havisham aka Begum that she was portraying in the Hindi version of the adaptation of celebrated novel Great Expectations.

A unit member from the production on condition of anonymity informed, “Rekhaji took the grave decision after she watched the final rushes of the film and expressed her discontent with Gattu Sahab (director Abhishek Kapoor fondly called) but Gattu Sahab tried to convince her by reshooting the scenes but before the scenes could be reshoot, that were planned to be shoot in Mumbai’s Mehboob studio, the shocking news of Rekha’s exit from the film arrived.”

However some media reports claim there was a difference of opinion between director Abhishek Kapoor and Rekha as both had diverse perspective about the character of Begun being portrayed by Rekha. Hence due to ego hassles Rekha quit.

But readers would be surprised to know that neither Rekha was dissatisfied by the character because, to be frank, if that would have been the case then she would have not signed the film in the first place.

Secondly there was no difference of opinion between Abhishek Kapoor and Rekha because with the exit of Rekha, Abhishek Kapoor is most hurt. In his statement he lamented, "It is entirely our loss to have missed this chance to work with the legendary Rekhaji, and I hope to work with her in the future."

So who is really behind this sudden development???

Well insiders claim the stern decision has been taken by UTV, the production house which claims the films shooting schedules have gone haywire as per planning and hence Rekha opted as she could not accommodate her dates with project.

A UTV spokesperson said, “Since the FITOOR schedule has changed from what was planned initially, the new dates clashed with Rekhaji's prior professional commitments. Hence she opted out the film.”

But UTV’s comment sound’s fishy because if you have a great actress like Rekha working in your film, then film producers find means to accommodate their schedules and not replace them with other with other actor.

Further UTV's Siddharth Roy Kapur has declined to comment and is mum on the topic. Instead he has termed Rekha’s exit and Tabu’s arrival in the film as ‘a casting coup of sorts, which is utterly bullshit because presence of Rekha in the film was actually a casting coup!

Thus surely there is something suspicious between UTV and Rekha, which UTV is trying to cover.

Doesn’t biopics like AZHAR glorify the baddies?

Biopics these days are the new success mantra in Bollywood thanks to the success of biopics like MAR KOM, BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG, PAAN SINGH TOMAR or Shah Rukh Khan’s hit film CHAK DE INDIA, which inspired from the life of hockey coach Mir Ranjan Negi, etc.

On the positive side making movies on biographies of inspiring historical personalities is a good idea because these films not only entertain but also inject new vigor and motivate the younger generation to inculcate fighting spirit and achieve their goal.

However on the flip side biopics made on controversial celebrities with tinted backdrop is a disturbing trend because such movies have a negative influence on the minds of the youngster. Secondly by glorifying such notorious elements of society the film industry is only trying to make them ‘Hero’

For instance Arjun Rampal’s forthcoming film DADDY, a biopic is on the notorious Mumbai gangster turned politician Arun Gawali. Incidentally Gawali, who fondly called Daddy by his fans, is currently serving life time imprisonment for the same.

Another biopic which is in question is Randeep Hoda starrer MAIN AUR CHARLES, depicting the tale of renowned serial killer and drug dealer Charles Shobraj, who was famous as 'Bikini Killer’.

And last but not the least even Ekta Kapoor’s forthcoming film AZHAR, being made on the life of controversial Indian former cricket captain Mohammad Azhardddin staring Emraan Hashmi.

Though there is no second opinion that Azharuddin as a batsman and Indian Captain has been stupendous but the dark side of his career is that he has been found guilty of fixing matches with a bookmaker, Mukesh Gupta but the Central Bureau of Investigation, India’s federal probe agency and banned for life from playing cricket.

Salman Khan a Free Man as important hit-and-run case files destroyed in Mantralaya fire!

Salman Khan’s fans have reasons to rejoice, no not because the first look of Salman Khan’s latest upcoming movie BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN has been released as per the schedule or Salman Khan has promised his fans (who do not understand English) to tweet simultaneously in Hindi and Urdu but there is a bigger reason to enjoy!

Readers may wonder what can be the other reason. Is Bhaijaan (Salman Khan fondly called by his fans) marrying? Well the news is even bigger than this!!

So behold your breath and read…………

According to RTI (Right To Information) activist who sought information regarding the details of the Salman Khan 2002 hit-and-run case from the Maharashtra government it has been revealed that Maharashtra government does not have ANY INFORMATION on Bollywood actor Salman Khan's 2002 hit-and-run case as all the important files containing vital information about Salman Khan’s police case have been gutted in the unfortunate fire that blazed at Mantralaya few years back!

Briefing media about the RTI, Mansoor Darvesh, the RTI activist informed, “I had filed the RTI query seeking information about the total number of counsels, lawyers, solicitors, legal advisors, public prosecutors, etc. engaged and appointed by the state government to fight the Salman Khan hit and run case but to my horror the government in its reply regretted that they do have knowledge as related documents have been LOST hence it cannot be made available".

Lamenting at the inefficiency of the Maharashtra government’s blatant incompetence to protect important files Darvesh, added, “The government had promised to the people that all files that got destroyed in the fire will be reconstructed. But alas! All the promises made by the government seem nothing but eyewash. The reality has been exposed.”

Expressing utter disappointment at Maharashtra government’s helplessness to reconstruct the crucial files destroyed in fire, Darvesh said, “Like Salman Khan there might be many more such important cases that may NOT reach any conclusion due to lack of evidence mentioned in the flamed files!!”

Actress Nutan was a professional hunter and has hunted a panther!

The brilliant actress of yesteryear, Nutan is widely acclaimed for her sober and women oriented roles. Making her debut with SEEMA, Nutan later did many hard-hitting sensitive roles in movies like SUJATA, BANDINI, MILAN, SARASWATICHANDRA, SAUDAGAR etc. She continued doing such roles till the fag end of career in movies like MAIN TULSI TERE AANGAN KI and MERI JUNG. Thus the viewers generally saw her on screen portraying weepy and poignant roles.

However readers would be surprised to know unlike her ‘reel’ roles Nutan was vibrant, extrovert and an adventurous woman in ‘real’ life. While celebrities of her time had favorite past-time hobbies like painting, fashion designing or enjoying filmy parties, Nutan in stark contrast loved to spend her quality time hunting!

Readers may note that hunting in those days was a legal and was the favorite hobby of rich and famous. Nutan, along with her husband, Colonel Rajneesh Behl, a naval officer, would spend their holidays hunting.

What may stun readers is that Nutan was not an amateur hunter but she was quite professional as she has the distinction of hunting a panther!

Speaking about her strange hobby Nutan in an interview informed, “I have been bold and extrovert since childhood. However the credit for developing interest in hunting and training me into a gallant and proficient hunter goes to my husband. He was a skilled hunter and always took me for hunting and during these stints he taught me the nuance of hunting so well that one day I hunted a panther myself!”

“What’s more even my son Mohnish Behl, who use to accompany us, learned hunting and has hunted many animals,” added Nutan

Salman Khan’s BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN is loosely based on 'love jihad'

Cinema is known as the mirror of society. The filmmakers make movies that are inspired by what they observe in society and make a comment in an entertaining style which not only entertains but also conveys a message.

Recently the country is in the grip of ‘love jihad’ or the conservative outlook of khap panchayats towards love and inter caste marriages. The filmmaker are thus tapping this sensitive issue and trying to educate the orthodox conservatives to bring an end to this gruesome tradition.

With recent success of films like Anushka Sharma’s NH10, Tiger Sharoff’s HEROPANTI and Kangana Ranaut’s hit film TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS the topic is becoming quite popular among the film folks. Arshad Warsi starrer GUDDU RANGEELA (GR), also has backdrop of the khap panchayats, and revolves around such crimes.

However prior to these films many filmmakers have tapped this evil issue. Ajai Sinha, who is a front leader in making purposeful television entertainment serials like ASTITVA-EK PREM KAHANI and HASRATEIN made a bold attempt in 2011 when he made a movie KHAP — A STORY OF HONOUR condemning the ancient custom of the Khap mandates.

The film talked about the controversial issue of honour killings that has rocked Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh etc where youngsters are being butchered by their own kith and kin in the name of age old traditions.

The film had Om Puri, Yuvika Chaudhary, Govind Namdeo, Mohnish Behl and Manoj Pahwa in pivotal roles.

Incidentally the film which was not released in Haryana as the khap panchayats pressured the Haryana Government to ban its release since as the film portrayed khap panchayats in poor light.

Interestingly even Salman Khan’s upcoming movie BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN is loosely based on 'love jihad' but instead of love between a Hindu boy and Muslim girl, the movie tackles a Hindu man’s affection for a Pakistani little girl who crosses border and comes to India. How Salman Khan helps in reuniting the little girl with her parents in Pakistan risking his life forms the crux of the film.

Thus filmmakers on their part are doing the noble task of eliminating hatred and budding love and secularism. It is up to the learned members of society to educate the illiterate about such crime and end the cruelty.

Remember if the society had not raised its voice against the evil system of Sati then even today, widows would have been blazed on the deathbed of their husbands!

After Sylvester Stallone its Arnold Schwarzenegger’s desire to act in Bollywood!

Gone are the days when Bollywood was looked down upon by the world cinema, particularly Hollywood. A glimpse of this can be gauged from the fact how Hollywood superstars are craving to act in Bollywood

After Sylvester Stallone expressed his desire to work with DABBANGG actor Salman Khan in an action thriller together the latest buzz is that Hollywood hunk and the TERMINATOR star Arnold Schwarzenegger too has suggested his wish to work in a Hindi film.

In an interview to a leading newspaper Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “Though India is known for making low budget movies but if I find a fascinating script and a brilliant director then I wouldn’t mind working in an Indian film.” He added, “As it is I have worked in films around the world so why not India?”

It may be noted in the past too many top Hollywood stars have shown then inclination of being part of Bollywood

Hollywood action star Jackie Chan too has said that he would love to part of Bollywood and for that matter if he gets a good role he would act at discounted rate too.

He said, “I would definitely want to do a Bollywood film! I love the music and dance sequences in Indian films. I can dance and sing. As long as I can get an exciting script, I’m even willing to give a discount to Bollywood producers!”

Hollywood hottie, Sharon Stone, who blazed the screen with her seductive appearance in Hollywood hit BASIC INSTINCT, in her visit to India had said, “I’d love to be in one of the Hindi movies and, of course, I have seen many Indian films.”

Likewise PRETY WOMEN actress Julia Roberts too had candidly confessed, “I am open to doing an all-out Indian film if the project interests me.”

‘Khan Trio’ comes closer yet again with BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN

The so called ‘Cold War’ seems to have ended between the ‘Khan Trio’, a picture of their friendship has cropped up yet again at the release of the first look of Salman Khan’s upcoming film BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN.

Instead of the customary release of the first look by the hero of the film, the first look of Salman Khan’s much awaited movie BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN has been unveiled by none other but his arch rival turned friend Shah Rukh Khan.

Unveiling the first look of the film, Shah Rukh Khan touched the emotional chord as he tweeted, “I Believe being a brother is bigger than being a hero. 'Bhaijaan' coming Eid 2015. How do u like the first look?”

Not behind Shah Rukh Khan tweeting about BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN’s first look, the other Khan, Aamir Khan tweeted, “Coming Soon.”

It may be remembered that Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan shared a health relation in the past and have worked together in many films like KARAN ARJUN, HUM TUMHARE HAIN SANAM and KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI. But the two came at loggerhead after they clashed at Katrina Kaif’s birthday party in 2008.

Later after five years of enmity in 2013 famous politician Baba Siddiqui brought the duo together at an Iftaar party.

Since then Shah Rukh Khan has developed a soft corner for Salman Khan. Be it during the wedding of Salman Khan’s sister Arpita, where SRK played a perfect role of an elder brother by blessing her and also dancing with Salman at the Mehndi function that took place at Salman Khan’s residence. He was also seen at Rajat Sharma’s ‘Aap Ki Adalat’ 21 years celebration party along with Aamir Khan. Again on May 5, ahead of the court verdict on Salman Khan’s hit-and-run case, Shah Rukh Khan was seen visiting Salman’s residence at the Galaxy Apartments.

So shall we presume the SRK-Salman enmity is over and a new chapter of friendship developed?

How Anupam Kher outscored film industry’s great actors with his performance in SAARANSH!

Mahesh Bhatt’s masterpiece SAARANSH that debuted brilliant actor Anupam Kher completed 31 years on May 25.

Recalling the movie Anupam Kher went emotional and tweeted, “Today I complete 31 years in Film Industry. It has been the most amazing journey since SAARANSH. Happy Birthday to me.”

Well every actor is emotional about his debut film but in case of Anupam Kher SAARANSH is special because the movie not only made him a star overnight but fetched him the Best Actor Filmfare Award too!

However what is most remarkable about this Filmfare Award is that Anupam Kher had outscored film industry’s heavy weight actors, who are revered as ‘God of Acting’ and went away stealing the award right under the nose of these stalwarts.

Readers would be anxious to know who these great actors? Well they are Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Naseeruddin Shah, genuinely acknowledged as the cornerstone actors of Indian Cinema.

Incidentally these three veterans of acting were competing in the same category for Best Actors that year. Frankly speaking all the three actors had given their career best performances in their films but alas in front of Anupam Kher’s towering performance in SAARANSH all their performances became pigmy!!

For instance Dilip Kumar was nominated for his mindboggling performance in MASHAAL. Even today the scene where he begs for help to rescue his dying wife on the deserted roads of Mumbai brings tears into our eyes.

Similarly Amitabh Bachchan was nominated for his powerful performance in SHARAABI. The intense emotional scenes of confrontation between him and his father played by Pran were superbly enacted by Bachchan.

However the cream de la cream scene of the movie is the emotional burst of Bachchan in the hospital were his employee, played by Om Prakash, dies in his arms.

The other most unfortunate actor who could not win the Filmfare award despite an outstanding performance was Naseeruddin Shah for his exceptional performance of a blind man in SPARSH.

People who have seen SPARSH will bet that after Dilip Kumar in DEEDAR (1951), Naseeruddin Shah was superb as the blind man in SPARSH. Though Naseer did not win Filmfare award but his performance was saluted by National Award.

Can Kangana Ranaut and Deepika Padukone diktat their terms in Bollywood?

With the smashing success of Deepika Padukone’s family drama PIKU crossing the magical figure of Rs 100 crore (worldwide) the other movie that is writing new history at box office is Kangana Ranaut’s TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS. Interestingly both are women centric and low budget films.

According to trade pundits the movie has pulled in a whopping Rs 22 Crore in just two days at box office as compared to the big budget Ranbir Kapoor’s BOMBAY VELVET, which collected the same amount after two weeks!

That’s not all looking at the movie’s positive reviews and the cine buff’s word of mouth publicity film trade experts believe TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS is set to become the biggest blockbuster of 2015.

One wonders with the two movies generating great business can Kangana Ranaut and Deepika Padukone diktat their terms in Bollywood just as the legendary actress of yesteryear did in the past.

Though Bollywood has been known to be male chauvinistic yet in the 50’s and the 60’s heroines like Meena Kumari, Nargis, Nutan, Vyjayanthimala etc dominated despite the presence of top stars like Dilip Kumar,Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar etc.

What may stun readers is that when Mehboob Khan made his most ambitious film MOTHER INDIA, he not only paid Nargis twice the amount what R.K. Films (Raj Kapoor’s production company) offered her but also a salute to her mind-blowing performance he gave her name in the credits and the film poster in BIGGEST LETTERS, a rare compliment ever given to any actress in Indian cinema.

Later on too, many talented actresses like Sharmila Tagore, Hema Malani, Asha Parekh, Sri Devi, Jaya Prada, Madhuri Dixit, Kajol have dictated their own terms and compelled filmmakers to pay them accordingly.

In fact even today Madhuri Dixit and Kajol work on their own terms and get roles written exclusively for them.

Thus now it is up to Kangana Ranaut and Deepika Padukone how they exploit their film’s success because if you are talented then success will follow you…

Remember what Baba Ranchoddas said in the film 3 IDITOS …

Success ke peeche mat bhago, kabil bano, success tao jhak marke ayegi!!!!!

Will Salman Khan give nod to Sylvester Stallone’s Hollywood action film?

Reports have it that after Bollywood superstar Salman Khan tweeted that he is an ardent fan of celebrated Hollywood superstar Sylvester Stallone, global recognized for his hit films ROCKY (Series of films that 1976 -2015) and RAMBO (1982 – 2008), Sylvester Stallone has responded positively to Salman’s tweet and even offered him a Hollywood film.

In his reply Stallone tweeted, “Would like to thank the super talented Indian superstar Salman Khan for the compliment he tweeted!”

The tweet further claimed that Stallone was so impressed by Salman Khan’s popularity around the globe that he has suggested that the two actors to work in an action film together.

Ever since Stallone’s reply about the two actors working together in an action film has been reported, speculation are rife that the Hollywood superstar was probably hinting at Salman Khan to act in his latest version of EXPENDABLES.

In the past the two other Khans’ viz. Badshah Khan aka Shah Rukh Khan and Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan have coolly declined the offers though Hollywood filmmakers have consistently tried to exploit the popularity of the two Indian superstars.

Shah Rukh Khan declined the offers saying that he wishes to act in a Hollywood film that does justice to his talent and the makes India proud. “I think the kind of role I would want to do in a Hollywood film is one that makes India proud and such a role is difficult,” he quipped.

Aamir Khan on the other hand says, “I may jump to do any film be it Hollywood, China or Japan but I have to get attracted to the creative material first. Till date whatever offers I got from International film industry have never excited me nor have their scripts though the roles offered were full fledge roles”.

Readers are aware during his recent visit to China to promote his film PK, Aamir Khan met Jackie Chan, who offered him to act in his film upcoming venture, ‘KUNG FU YOGA’. But Aamir declined due to his commitments in India.

Now let’s watch will Salman Khan give nod to Sylvester Stallone’s lucrative offer or like the other Khans’ be diplomatic.

Even at 43 there is someone on whom Karan Johar depends…Who is he?

From a brilliant film director to an astute film producer to hosting TV Shows and acting Karan Johar is a bundle of talent. However even as he turns 43 today there is someone in his life on whom this multifaceted personality demands.

Who is the secret person whom Karan Johar regards as the corner stone of his life and before each and every decision he gives his opinion prime importance. Any Guesses ???

No he is not Shah Rukh Khan, who everybody knows is quite close to Karan. Nor is he, Amitabh Bachchan, whom Karan Johar reveres next to his father, the great film maker, Yash Johar.

Well the person in question is Aditya Chopra, the outstanding filmmaker and son legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra.

Speaking about Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar says, “Adi is not just my mentor, friend and a guru who thought me the art of filmmaking but it is his extraordinary sense of understanding the pulse of the audience that has guided me in my career and made me a successful filmmaker.”

He adds, “The untold aspect about my relation with Adi is that whenever Adi does not like something, unlike others, he is straightforward to criticize my faults frankly on my face and it is his candid attitude that makes me work on my errors and produce a good film.”

Recalling how he awaits Aditya Chopra’s approval Karan says, “When I made WAKE UP SID, Adi was so impressed that he asked me film maker Ayan's number. Similarly for AGNEEPATH and YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI he was the first person to give his thumps up. So, whenever I make a movie I quietly and silently seek his approval.”

Is Kangana Ranaut the next lady Khan of Bollywood?

After scores of awards and the well deserved National award for her mind-blowing performance in QUEEN, Kangana Ranaut has taken Bollywood yet gain with her irresistible dual role in director Aanand L Rai’s TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS.

According to reports TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS has opened to fantastic response and the audience is going bananas over Kangana Ranaut superlative performance.

Trade pundits claim if the movie makes brilliant business than Kangana Ranaut would join the ranks of Bollywood Khan Trio and may be termed as the Lady Khan of Bollywood!!!

Film buffs have given their thumps up for the movie. A cine buff praising Ranaut’s performace said, “She is amusing as eccentric Tanu and fearless as Kusum. She reminds the double role played superbly by Hema Malani in SEETA AUR GEET but what makes Kangana Ranaut more appealing is her Haryanvi dialect that adds flavor to her daring role as the valiant Kusum.”

Actor Irrfan Khan bowled over Kangana Ranaut’s act in the film tweeted, “TWM Returns is a Cracker of a film. Kangana is at her best. She is not just chatpatti but Chat Ki Dukan (She is not just spicy but a shop of spice)

Kangana Ranaut’s contemporary actress Preity Zinta commented that the film will not only rock at box office but will also create history at all the awards function, probably on the lines of her last film QUEEN!

Though the film critics have criticized the film as old wine presented in a new bottle but all have a unanimous admiration for Kangana Ranaut’s performance.

A film critic wrote, “She can act in films that are thorough disappointments, but she sells them to you with such charm and style that you don't really care that she and the stories she's telling deserve better.”

Wah Wah Salman Khanji, Kismat Kya Payi….

Wah wah Ramji, jodi kya banaayi….

Remember this hit song from Salman Khan’s hit film HUM AAPKE HAIN KAUN!

I take a little journalistic liberty a alter the song as ….

Wah Wah Salman Khanji, Kismat kya payi….

Truly Salman Khan is not only been bestowed by a debonair personality but it seems the ‘Almighty’ has also penned his destiny with golden letters or else which accused, who has been convicted for grave charges of ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ and sentenced to five years in jail, can daringly move freely not just in India but also dream of performing shows abroad!

The height of amazement is that Salman Khan is out on bail and High Court had banned him to travel abroad!!! According to High Court order Salman Khan cannot move out of the country until June 2015 when the case pending the hearing and disposal of his appeal against the conviction will be hurt but reports have it that Salman Khan has already confirmed his attendance at the Arab Indo Bollywood Awards being held in Dubai.

In a press release the organizers Varun from Al Bustan Group, who are conducting the first of its kind Bollywood award show said, “We have spoken to Salman Khan about the hassles of his presence at the show but Salman bhai has assured us that there is no legal problem for him to travel abroad.”

He added, “Bhaijaan (Salman Khan) also promised to arrive in Dubai on 28 May and perform two dances.”

It may be noted that Salman Khan’s lawyer’s have sought leave from the High Court of Bombay to travel to Dubai on 29 May but still the case is to be heard and Salman Khan awaits court permission to actually travel to the emirate but his confidence level is worth flattering because he knows if he can get last minute bail then who on earth can cancel his appeal to travel abroad!!!

Interestingly on the flip side in January fellow Bollywood star, Sanjay Dutt, sentenced for firearms offences, had a parole request rejected. But if you are SALMAN KHAN then court orders don’t matter! Don’t they??

Akshay Kumar: “We are not some Mahalaxmi Ka Ghoda running a race!”

Though the Khan trio may be the most sought after celebrities in Bollywood but the actor who is silently but consistently proving his weight in the industry is none other but Akshay Kumar thanks to the mega success of his recent movies BABY and GABBAR IS BACK both crossing the coveted Rs 100 crore mark!

Interestingly both the movies despite being commercial in content had social message. Elated at the success of his movies Akshay Kumar said, “I am just so overwhelmed with all the love that people shower on me. God! I don’t know what to do ... how to return their love. The more I try to give back, the more it multiplies. It is just unbelievable.”

Speaking about movies with social message Akshay Kumar says, “It feels great when not just fans but even politicians congratulate us on taking up the issues like corruption in GABBAR IS BACK or terrorism in BABY.”

However what annoys Akshay Kumar is the lack of unity among stars in Bollywood

Recently when Akshay was asked about a multi-star movie opposite a Khan he said, “There is no competition or bad blood between anyone. I am sure, like me, others also wish me well. But the only problem today is, there is a lack of unity among all of us. Maybe, that’s why there are not many multi-starrers and two-hero projects coming up now.”

Akshay Kumar believes the competition in the film industry has been reduced to nothing more than a rat race.

“I don’t believe in competition. We are not some Mahalaxmi Ka Ghoda that we need to constantly race against each other. I feel all such loose talk is a thing of the past,” he quips.

Amitabh Bachchan invests in a Singapore-based website firm

After incurring losses in his film production company ABCL (Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited) Amitabh Bachchan has decided it wise to invest in a Singapore-based company that runs free cloud storage, e-distribution and micro-payment platform Ziddu.com.

According to reports Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachchan have jointly invested $250,000 (about Rs 1.6 crore) in Meridian TechPte Limited. According to Venkata Srinivas Meenavalli, founder and chief executive of Meridian Tech informed media, "Mr Amitabh Bachchan and his family have invested in Ziddu.com at a valuation of around $71 million."

It may be noted that Ziddu was among the top five file-sharing sites across the world, generating 1.2 billion page views with visitors from more than 225 countries.

Besides Amiatbh Bachchan a majority of Bollywood celebrities are engaged in business because they are aware about the instable career of Bollywood. "Many Bollywood celebrities generally get into business to make sure that they do not have to depend solely on the success or failure of their films,” says Anirban Das Blah, managing director at KWAN Entertainment and Marketing Solutions.

Anil Sekhri, a Chartered Accountant, rightly points that the younger bread of film celebrities have taken lessons from their yesteryears peers, who were reduced to poverty when their charisma declined. Remember legends like Meena Kumari, Bharat Bhushan, Mehmood, Chandershekar, Bhagwan etc.

Anil Sekhri is associated with many top Bollywood actors for more than two decades. He says, "Initially actors used to invest in land and real estate but the present generation of actors is more adventurous. After investing in properties they get into non-Bollywood ventures like solar projects, restaurants, spas etc."

Few stars who are engaged in business other than films include Shah Rukh, who is the owner of IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders with Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta. In addition has also bought 26 percent shares of the Indian franchise of KidZania, an international chain of family entertainment centres.

Sunil Shetty besides having chain of restaurants in India is also the owner of Mischief, a series of boutiques spread across Mumbai.

Ajay Devgan is a part investor in the Charanaka solar 25 MW plant project in Gujarat.

Arjun Rampal runs a lounge bar Lap in New Delhi. He also runs an event management company, Chasing Ganesha.

Mithun Chakraborty owns the Monarch group of hotels, across the country.

Thus today’s crop of celebrities has safeguarded their future so that they do not end up into taters as their yesteryear pals.

Anurag Kashyap’s assistant Neeraj Ghaywan shines at Cannes Film Festival with his debutant film MASAAN

While the audience may have given a thumps down to Anurag Kashyap’s most dear film BOMBAY VELVET but his home production MASAAN, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan has won a thumps up at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

According to latest reports MASAAN, produced by Anurag Kashyap and directed by debutant director Neeraj Ghaywan has floored the audience at Cannes Film Festival, who were so overwhelmed by the movie that the audience gave a thunderous applause and a five-minute long standing ovation!

Surely the movie’s success at Cannes must have broaden Anurag Kashyap’s chest and given him a sigh of relief because the kind of cinema he his encouraging will surely in days to come change the face of Indian cinema.

Speaking about the movie, it took three years for Neeraj Ghaywan to complete the script. In an interview Ghaywani said, “MASAAN is an attempt of escaping the conventional mindset, the rigid social structure."

He added, “MASAAN is set in the religious city of Varanasi and touches the age old tale of a low caste man (in this case Dom community, who work at cremation grounds) falling in love with a high caste girl but what makes the movie intriguing is its authentic backdrop and its innovative treatment.”

Readers would be surprised to know that Neeraj Ghaywan, is an electrical engineering graduate from Hyderabad’s Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology and was earning a six figure salary but his passion for cinema drew him to filmdom and he quit his lucrative job.

Another nursery rhyme maligned by Bollywood!

After Akshay Kumar starrer ENTERTAINMENT’s song Johnny Johnny... haanji.. Tuney pee hai? naaji…. Which tainted the famous nursery rhyme Johnny Johnny...Yes Papa… another popular kid nursery rhyme - Lalla Lalla Lori, Dhooth Ki Katori… has been plagiarized by Bollywood and yet again the nursery rhyme has been maligned into offensive lines that are sure to pollute the minds of kids.

The song in question is Lalla Lalla Lori, ‘Daaru’ Ki Katori….penned by Mayur Puri and sung by Jigar, Priya Panchal and Madhav Krishna in the forthcoming movie WELCOME 2 KARACHI starring Arshad Warsi.

Annoyed by the distortion of nursery rhymes a NGO has filled PIL against the Central Government, Censor Board, the Delhi Government and producers Pooja Entertainment Pvt. Ltd asserting the song promotes liquor consumption and ‘maligns’ a nursery rhyme.

The PIL underlines the following stanza ….
Ab main chhota baccha nahi; Bournvita peeta nahi
Ghadi mein saat baje ; I'm on daaru ki katori
Daaru ko behne de; Thodi thodi thodi chadhne de

(I am not a small kid; I have stopped drinking Bournvita
When it’s seven in clock, I indulge in drinking
Let the alcohol flow; little by little let me get intoxicated)

An activist from the NGO claimed the lyrics of the song fall under the objectionable category of article 47 of the Indian constitution (duty of the state to improve the standard of living and to improve public health affairs).

It further urged the court to implement a policy wherein such objectionable film songs which malign nursery rhyme must be banned and film producers strictly penalized.

Interestingly in case of ENTERTAINMENT song too an NGO Early Childhood Association (ECA) had raised it voice. They had even urged Bollywood filmmakers to spare nursery rhymes from being distorted as films have lasting impression on young minds and such songs can pollute their young minds.

Hope our so called sensible filmmaker understand and keep aloof from tarnishing nursery rhyme and content that evil has effect  on our children because they are the future of country and if our future is tainted than what progress can we expect???

The unfortunate tale of Aruna Shanbaug ends peacefully! Bollywood mourns!

Imagine yourself for being on a hospital bed in a vegetative state with twisted hands and crooked feet, no vision in eyes and in the name of food you are fed just liquids through your nose. At times you silently cry in agony and when the sufferings swell you scream hysterically for hours but there is no mercy. This agonizing condition continues for not one month or one year or ten years but for a consistent 42 years!

Don’t you think it is far worse than our sins being chastise in hell? Well I think every soul on earth will agree that this kind of life is thousand times worse than the horrors of sin being penalized in hell.

Hence when the unfortunate Aruna Shanbaug, a former nurse in Mumbai’s KEM hospital, who lived the above mentioned horrifying life breathed her last in Mumbai, Bollywood film actor cum director Satish Kaushik rightly wrote in his condolence message, "42 Years... My God... Terrible.. Aruna Shanbaug at last got rid of her miseries and pain... May heaven be the happiest place for her... RIP!”

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar too paid a befitting condolence to her. In his tweet he aptly wrote "A 42-yr struggle ends as Aruna Shanbaug leaves for a better life in a better world. RIP.”

For readers who are not aware of the brave heart Aruna Shanbaug, She was a strict and sincere nurse working at KEM hospital in Mumbai. So you may wonder what brought her doom. Well, frankly speaking it was her honesty for which she paid such a heavy price.

According to reports she kept an eye on a hospital ward boy who was corrupt and threatened her many times to expose his misdeeds. In anger the ward boy sexually assaulted her and when she resisted he brutally choked her with a dog-chain. As a result the blood supply to her brain was blocked resulting in brain stem contusion and injury to her cervical cord, which also left her cortically blind.

The incident occurred on the night of 27 November 1973, since then she was bedridden. She was declared brain dead but artificially kept alive by nurses at Mumbai’s KEM Hospital.

An appeal for passive euthanasia (Mercy Killing) was filled by Author Pinki Virani, who wrote a book on Aruna’s life called “Aruna’s Story: The True Account of a Rape and its Aftermath”. She was successful in convincing the Supreme Court that such a futile life can be terminated as per patient’s relatives wish.

In 2011 acting on Virani’s petition, the Supreme Court legalised passive euthanasia in 2011. However the tragedy is that Aruna Shanbaug was denied the benefit because the nurses of KEM Hospital refused to entertain the idea of allowing her such a death!

However the bigger irony of the case is that it was the same staff and administration of the KEM hospital that refused to grant passive euthanasia to Aruna, kept silent when the charges of rape and attempt to murder were leveled on the ward boy, who made Aruna’s life miserable.

Since the KEM Hospital did not come forward the police filed an FIR and fought the case in court. But due to no evidence from KEM hospital the culprit got a jail term of just 6 years!

Today he is freeman and is also working as a ward boy in a hospital in Delhi!!!

Isn’t this the hypocrisy of KEM Hospital???

Bollywood rocked by another Suicide!

Stardom and depression go hand in hand … don’t believe take a look at Tinsel Town and you will acknowledge that most film celebrities who have committed suicide have been victim of depression.

From the maverick filmmaker Guru Dutt to the bewitching and buoyant Divya Bharti to the sex symbol Silk Smitha to the struggling actress Jiah Khan each have been prey of despair and melancholy.

The latest to join the list of multiple suicides in Indian Cinema is Shikha Joshi (40) a struggling actress who made her presence felt in director Ajay Bahl’s moderate successful film BA PASS (2012).

Briefing the media senior police inspector Ravindranath Pawar of Versova police station said, “Ms. Joshi was staying at her friend’s place and was found in a serious condition with her neck slit by kitchen knife in her bathroom. She was rushed to nearby Kokilaben Hospital in Andheri where she was pronounced dead. Later, the body was sent to Cooper Hospital for post-mortem.”

The police said the prima facie reveals a case of suicide. However as committing suicide by slashing one’s own throat is a rarity hence the police is investigating every possible angle related to the death. The police have also not ruled a case of murder.

Besides Bollywood, the South Indian film industry too is plagued with many actors, more particularly actresses taking the harsh step.

According to Dr Lakshmi Vijayakumar, consultant psychiatrist and founder trustee, SNEHA, a suicide prevention centre in Chennai, the reason why film celebrities commit suicide is because actors are distanced from reality, get to the top positions quickly and go through sudden, sharp fluctuations in life.
