Sahir Ludhianvi’s lyrics on women are most poignant! Wanna know why?

Sahir Ludhianvi is regarded as one of India’s greatest poets of the 20th century. Oct 25 marks the death anniversary of this legendary poet. Raaga.Com pays him tribute and enlightens readers why Sahir’s poetry was poignant and hard hitting whenever he penned a lyric on women.

If readers could recall his soul stirring song Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko… from B.R. Chopra’s film SADHNA they would agree that Sahir was at his best when he penned this lyric. The song is direct attack on mankind as to how man ill treats her despite the fact that woman is the mother, who gives birth to man on this earth.

Mark the lines …

Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko; Mardon ne use bazaar diya

Jab dil chaaha masla-kuchla; Jab ji chaaha dhutkaar diya

(Woman gave birth to men; And men gave her the brothel

They crush and trample at her at will; Rejected and cast off her at will)

The most killing lines are …

Jin hothon ne unko pyaar kiya; Un hothon ka vyopaar kiya

Jis kokh mein inka jism dhala; Us kokh ka kaarobaar kiya

(The lips which gave them love: They traded those very lips

The womb in which their bodies were formed: They reduced that womb to mere merchandise).

Sahir’s skill as a lyricist par excellence can be judged from the song Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo…. (PYAASA). The highlight of this song is that it is pictuirused on a prostitute but Sahir uses such brilliant words that it conveys the sexual overtones without being vulgar.

Another milestone lyric Sahir wrote is in the film INSAAF KA TARAZU. The song goes…

Log aurat ko phakat jism samajh lete hain;

Rooh bhi hoti hai usme ye kahan sochte hain

Rooh kya hoti hai; Isse unhe matlab hi nahin….

(People consider woman only as body

They do not understand that she also has a soul

Bit sick minded people do not know what soul is!!!)

So the question is why did Sahir write such painful and forceful lyrics? Well the fact is Sahir had seen his mother being ill treated by his aristocratic Zamindaar father.

In rebel when Sahir grew he left his father’s house and took his mother along. Sahir never married because he loved his mother dearly and did not wish to share his love with another woman.

Has Sooraj Barjatya done right by cutting the length of PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO?

Bollywood is known for making lengthy films, particularly, if it is a big budget ambitious film. Remember Bollywood’s most successful blockbusters like MUGHAL-E-AZAM (3hours, 18m), ) SANGAM (1964, 3 hours, 58 minutes), SHOLAY (3 hours, 24 minutes), AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY (3hours, 5 minutes), LAGAAN (2001, 3hours, 44 minutes) the list is long.

In fact Sooraj Barjatya who is known for making entertaining family dramas since his debut film has an obsession of making lengthy films and all his film have been hits. Remember his directorial debut MAINE PYAR KIYA (3 hours 15 minutes), HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN (3 hours 26 minutes) and HUM SAATH SAATH HAIN (nearly 4 hours)

Hence like his previous films he had also made PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO 3 hours 20 minute’s long film. However it seems Salman Khan’s father Salim Khan, Bollywood’s top ranking writer, has advised Sooraj Barjatya to prune the film.

A source close to Salim Khan informed that Salim Khan is quite impressed by the film but felt the movie becomes tiresome due to its length. Hence he has suggested Sooraj Barjatya to edit unwanted action scenes and songs to make the film more spellbinding and crisper.

Sooraj Barjatya, who has great regards for Salim Khan has taken his advice seriously and has edited the film by almost 30 minutes.

However famous Trade expert Atul Mohan feels Sooraj Barjatya has done wrong by deleting the length of the movie. He counters, “Actually cine buffs love long movies and if it is a Salman Khan film then everybody wants more and more of Salman Khan because his magic and charisma is such.”

True because if we take a look at Amitabh Bachchan’s films released in the late 70’s and 80’when he was dominating as Superstar every filmmaker made lengthy films. Remember MUQADDAR KA SIKANDAR (3 hours, 9 min), SHAHENSHAH (3 hours), KABHI KABHIE (3 hour) etc.

Whether Sooraj Barjatya has done the right things by pruning the film will only be decided when the film releases this Diwali but one thing is sure Salman Khan’s fans have been robbed of the extra time that they would have enjoyed this Diwali!!!

Right or Wrong????

Abhijeet Bhattacharya accuses ‘Anti Hindu’ forces behind the alleged molestation charges against him!

Bollywood’s renowned playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya who has to his list some memorable hit songs like Tum Dil Ki Dhadkan Mein….; Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha….; Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaoon… Suno Na Suno Na…… has accused ‘Anti-Hindu’ forces behind the alleged charges of molestation that have been filed against him by a woman during the Durga Pooja in Mumbai.

According to reports the Durga Pooja Pandal at Lokhandwala in Mumbai's Andheri suburb was jam packed as popular Bollywood singer Kailash Kher was performing. Abhijeet Bhattacharya being one of the orgainsers of the pooja was keeping a hawk eye to maintain peace and avoid chaos.

However due to overcrowding a lady (who was invitee) got excited when Kailash Kher began his performance. Being short in height she stood up her seat to take a clear glimpse of the singer. As a result she blocked the view of the stage for the people sitting behind in rows, who made uproar.

Abhijeet Bhattacharya, who was around tried to move the lady aside but she raised hue and cry over alleging Abhijeet trying to molest her by touching her inappropriately.

Oshiwara police station's Senior Inspector Subhash Khanvilkar informed media, “On the basis of the victim's complaint, an offence under IPC sections of 354 (a) (sexual harassment), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 34 was registered against the singer.”

Denying the molestation charges Abhijeet Bhattacharya claimed, “We were aware of anti Hindu forces/ terrorist threats and sabotage of this Hindu Durga Puja and that is working well for them."

It may be remembered earlier Abhijeet Bhattacharya had supported the Shiv Sena ban on Pakistani artists and termed them 'dengue artists'.
