Subhash Ghai dedicates Scholarship in the name of Dilip Kumar

Eminent filmmaker Subhash Ghai, renowned as the Showman of Bollywood after Raj Kapoor, presented the legendary actor Dilip Kumar one of the rarest gift that the thespian must have received on his 92 birthday.

As a humble gratitude to the greatest actor of Indian Cinema, Subhash Ghai announced setting up of a scholarship in the name of Dilip Kumar for the students pursuing film course at his film institute Whistling Woods International in Mumbai.

Speaking about the announcement Subhash Ghai said, "Dilip sahib has taught me to bring dignity to this profession of cinema and to bring a change in cinema culture of India by setting up a creative brainstorming campus. “My daughter Meghna Ghai gave me this wonderful idea. In fact we have been providing scholarships since the last five years, but it is the first time that we have instituted one after a personal name of an actor. Dilip Kumar brings dignity to our scholarship,” added Ghai.

Dilip Kumar and Subhash Ghai share a warm relation. The younger generation may be unaware that in the 80’s when Dilip Kumar made his second inning it was Subhash Ghai, who gave him the change over image from the off repeated rural based roles that Dilip Kumar was familiar with in movies like NAYA DAUR, GANGA JAMUNA, BAIRAAG, GOPI, SAGINA etc. However with VIDHATA, Subhash Ghai transformed him into an urbane underworld, smashing gangsters and carrying sophisticated guns.

After VIDHATA, Subash Ghai gave Dilip Kumar some of the most memorable role and some of the most fascinating combinations like in KARMA he brought the brilliant actor Naseerudin Shah opposite Dilip Kumar and in SAUDAGAR, he brought together the rarest of combination of Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar, working together after 20 years! In nut shell the Subhash Ghai – Dilip Kumar Jodi has been a great boon to Indian cinema.

Few may know that Whistling Woods was inaugurated by the hands of Dilip Kumar with 80 students in 2006. And now with the scholarship in the name of Dilip Kumar, the thespian has become immortal in Whistling Woods.

The highlight of Dilip Kumar’s credential as an actor is his versatility as an actor who loved to experiment with different roles. Thus if he could convey the pathos of a tragic lover in DEVDAS (1955) convincing, he could generate humor playing the dual role in RAM AUR SHYAM (1967). Similarly while he was adept in romantic roles like MUGHAL-E-AZAM (1960) he proved he could even play anti hero in ANDAAZ (1949), which by many is regarded as a risk he took, when he was riding smoothly as hero. Later in GANGA JUMUNA when he played a hard core dacoit, even his hardened critics were taken by surprise.

Superstar of the Millennium, Amitabh Bachchan rates him as the finest actor ever. In his blog Amitabh writes, “ Dilip Kumar sahab is my idol and has been since the day I first saw his work. He has been an inspiration not just for me but I am certain to thousands of those that have ever dreamt of facing a camera for the art form called cinema.
