Gulzar Pledges To Make The World Understand The Worth Of Rabindranath Tagore Through His Translations.

The name Gulzar is synonymous to some of the finest lyrics written by him like golden era classics like Mora Gora Ang Laile ...; Jeevan Se Lambe Hain Bandhu... Hamne Dekhi Hai Un Aankhon Ki… to the latest hits like Tujhse Naaraz Nahin Zindagi..; Chaiyya Chaiyya... Jia Ho...

In addition the Oscar winning lyricist has even give some thought provoking movies as a sensitive filmmaker like MAUSAM, KOSHISH, AANDHI, MERE APNE, MAACHIS etc.

Gulzar, born as Sampooran Singh Kalra in his career over four decades in film industry has won wide acclaim. His contribution to poetry, films and music cannot be comprehended without mentioning his accolades that include the Padma Bhushan, the Sahitya Akademi Award, a Grammy and Oscar for Jai Ho… song in the movie Hollywood movie SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. 

He has won several Filmfare and National Awards and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award of the Indian cinema. 

Recently Gulzar is busy working on the Hindi and English translation on the poetic works of Rabindranath Tagaore, the Nobel laureate, poet, novelist and composer 

Gulzar in an interview confessed, “I have taken the project to introduce more and more children across the country to know Tagore's works. It is agonizing that the current generation is unaware of Tagore and don't even care to teach their children to the magnitude of his creations.”

He added, “I not against children learning Shakespeare. But in the process, they shouldn’t miss out on the magic that’s Tagore. There’s an urgent need to introduce him in our children's curricula and inculcate a love for them not as mere texts but works of art.” 

Regarding the English translation of Tagore Gulzar says, “The West's understanding of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore is limited to Gitanjali but the fact is that Tagore is far bigger than that. Hence I have taken upon myself to translate his work and make the world understand the worth of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.”
