Why is Mohd Rafi the greatest singer?

This Mohd Rafi remember suit to a perfect ‘T’ to pay homage to the legendary singer on his 90th birth anniversary that falls today. Raaga.Com remembers the maestro and explores why Mohd Rafi is regarded as the greatest singer.

Recently in CNN-IBN conducted a poll and took public opinion among the golden voices of Hindi cinema from the likes of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi and the people voted for Mohammad Rafi. He was thus crowned the greatest singer amongst the legends of Hindi cinema music.

Listen to Mohammad Rafi Songs on

A student of musical stalwarts like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pt Jiwan Lal Mattoo and Firoze Nizami at the tender age of 13 young Md Rafi proved his potential as a singer par excellence.

Thus at an early age Rafi became a name to reckon. In Bollywood he ruled for three decades from 50’s to the 70’s .He sung for all top stars. In the 50’s he sung for Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor, despite Mukesh was his favorite singer!

In the 60’s he was at the peak of his career. In fact it was his matchless songs that set the box office ringing and turned many wooden actors like Rajendra Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Dharmendra, Joy Mukherjee, Biswajeet, etc into stars solely only the strength of Rafi Sahab’s songs.

The 70 was his testing time and it was during this phase Rafi sahab witnessed a threat from his rival singer Kishore Kumar, who became a star singer thanks to his association with the superstar of that era Rajesh Khanna. As a result this was a lean phase of Rafi’s career while Kishore Kumar ruled.

However it was this phase which brought on the horizon the true genius of Rafi. Though Kishore Kumar was the most sought after singer but whenever music directors stuck on difficult songs they had to rush for Rafi! A pointer to this is the best example of the Rajesh Khannna’s hit movie HATHI MERE SAATHI. All the songs are sung by Kishore Kumar except the super hit climax song Nafrat Ki Duniya Ko Chhod Ke….

According to Laxmikant (of music director duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, who composed music for the film) initially the song was to be recorded in Kishore Kumar’s voice but despite several takes Kishore Kumar was not able to express the desired pathos and anguish required for song. Laxmikant suggested Rafi to sing the song but the producer insisted on Kishore Kumar, as he was the star singer.

After a tussle between producers and music director duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal the song was decided to be deleted from the film. But Laxmikantji, director M.A. Thirumugam and Rajesh Khanna were against deleting the song. Finally Rafi sahab was called to sing the song.

He sang the song with such emotions that the audiences could not control their tears in cinema halls! Even today when you hear the song, eyes are filled with tears due to Rafi Sahab’s soul string and grief ridden voice!!!

Rewind 2014 : Bollywood Top Controversies - Part 1

Dear readers with year 2014 coming to an end; Raaga.Com takes readers down the memory lane and remembers the important events that made a mark in Bollywood. Read on….

In our First series we take a look at the Top 10 controversies that rocked Bollywood

The controversy that tops the list is Bollywood child star turned South heroine Shweta Basu Prasad, who was caught in an alleged prostitution racket. She underwent a hell of life after the Metropolitan Sessions Court, Nampally, Hyderabad, gave Shweta a clean chit in the infamous case.

Listen to Bollywood Songs on

The other most sensational controversy of the year was the Bollywood actress Preity Zinta’s decry about physical abuse by her long-time beau Ness Wadia. She alleged that Ness Wadia tried to molest her during an IPL match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. When she resisted his indecent approaches and raised alarm, he threatening her with dire consequences. The matter later to legal tangle.

The third position to the controversy that created a national debate in the year 2014 goes to eminent Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, who stunned the nation with his nude poster of his upcoming movie PK. The actor drew huge flaks from his fans for virtually standing naked on a railway track just covering his modesty with a stereo tape-recorded!

The controversy that occupies fourth position is about Jaya Bachchan’s bitter remark against Shah Rukh Khan’s movie HAPPY NEW YEAR. Jaya in a statement said, “HAPPY NEW YEAR is the most nonsensical film I have seen in recent years. I watched the movie only because it has his son Abhishek Bachchan!”

Later megastar Amitabh Bachchan sent a text message to Shahrukh apologizing on Jaya’s behalf and explained that her intention was not to hurt the sentiments of the film or its cast. In fact even Ash and Abhishek also went up to Shahrukh’s residence and apologized but Shah Rukh refused to attend them, instead his wife entertained them.

Bollywood hunk Salman Khan recognized for controversies comes at number five. This year he had to pay a huge prize for accepting the invitation from Narendra Modi during the kite festival in Gujarat.

Salman Khan’s fans in Gujarat, particularly Muslim, were deeply hurt by Salman’s admiration for Narendra Modi. According to reports the anger was so extreme that Salman’s movie film JAI HO was boycotted and the movie failed to garner good business.

F.I.R. against ‘PK’ to help movie’s Box Office Collection?

Rajkumar Hirani, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Siddharth Roy Kapur, and superstar Aamir Khan are on sky nine because their most anticipated movie PK has lived up to the expectations of the cinegoers and the movie is creating new box office history.

From hardcore film critics to the cine buff the movie has been widely applauded particularly, for its brilliant subjects, which exposes the fallacy of multiple religions with panache.

However when everything was going so smooth the film has landed in trouble because Prashant Patel, a cynical Hindu fundamentalist and Secretary of Hindu Legal Cell has lodged an F.I.R. against director Rajkumar Hirani, Aamir Khan, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and UTV head honcho Sidharth Roy Kapur alleging the movies ridicules the Hindu rituals and portrays Lord 'Shiva' in bad light.

Listen to Aamir Khan Songs on

Patel has also objected to numerous dialogues which according to him are vicious and offend various faiths and religions. He raised objection particularly to the dialogue ’Jo darta vo hi mandira jaata hai‘in his complaint.

The FIR against the film is booked under section 153A, 295A of Indian Penal Code to prevent any communal disturbances in the country.

It’s true that religious sentiments in India are very fragile hence the movement somebody mocks the traditions and beliefs, Indian get easily hurt. However when the same Indians watch movies that are satirical spoof at the futility of many religious rituals and customs they take the house down with their applause. A pointer to this is the superlative success of Akshay and Paresh Rawal OMG and the recent Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani’s directed movie PK.

So the question arises who are these people who raise eye brows and lodge police complaint demanding the banning of such films claiming the movies would create turmoil and disturb the nation’s secular fabric?

Nevertheless publicity, be it bad of good, is always productive and if it’s for a movies than it is boon for the film producers as it help in attracting more audience. Thus it seem producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Siddharth Roy Kapur , Rajkumar Hirani, Aamir Khan and party will have the last laugh!

Public Verdict - Aamir Khan’s PK is a complete ‘Paisa Vasool’ movie!

Usually when expectation runs high it becomes difficult to live up to the standards. Bollywood has many instances when a much anticipated big budget movie had fallen flat on its face. The best example probably would be Boney Kapoor’s ROOP KI RANI CHORON KA RAJA (1993) staring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi, which was the costliest movie of its time and was eagerly anticipated but turned out a colossal disaster at the box office!

However there are few examples when a much anticipated movie has proved the test of the audience. The recent Aamir Khan - Rajkumar Hirani's PK fall in the second category.

Listen to Aamir Khan Songs on

According to the reports pouring from the people who seen PK, the movie is being raved for its satirical take on the conservative and complex issues of religion and superstitions. Though the subject has been depicted before but what makes PK remarkable is that it handles the grave issue in a roller costar ride of humor and emotion.

Rajkumar Hirani with the movie has revived the memory of the great showman Raj Kapoor who made commercial movies with hard-hitting serious subjects remember AWAAR, MERA NAAM JOKER, PREM ROG, RAM TERI GANGA MALI, HEENA etc.

Likewise Rajkumar Hirani with a commercial backdrop has made a thought provoking movie that ridicules the society rituals and the culture amidst which we have grown but have always been indifferent to it. The simple question asked by the protagonist (Aamir Khan), who plays an alien, compels us to ponder and leaves us dumbfounded on many myths prevalent even today in our society.

Aamir Khan steals the show with his natural performance and his funny one-liners are being applauded the most. Anuksha Sharam is dynamic in the role of journalist.

Besides excellent direction Rajkumar Hirani deserves kudos for his mind-blowing script which he has written in association with Abhijat Joshi. The movie has an absorbing narration and to add glitter to the narration are sterling performances by its supporting cast of Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Sanjay Dutt, Saurabh Shukla and Ram Sethi.

Thus PK has all the necessary ingredients ranging from an excellent script, melodious music, remarkable camera work and wonderful editing all that makes the movie a completely paisa vasool affair.

The movie through its sarcastic humor laced with dollops of emotions leaves the viewers in awe. It seems Vidhu Vinod Chopra has yet again minted gold and `PK` is sure to surpass the top grosser of 2014.
