Lessons in endorsements that Bollywood actors needs to learn from South film Stars!

The recent news about a F.I.R. being launched against Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor and ace film actor-director Farhan Akhtar for promoting a portal that allegedly is involved in ‘duping’ customers has once again opened the Pandora’s Box that should film celebrities endorsing products must be held liable for misleading advertisements?

According to K V Thomas, Chairman of Central Consumer Protection Council (CCPC) a misleading commercial by a leading film celebrity on TV; even for a single day helps the advertisers to deceive millions of gullible consumers, who are tempted to buy the product solely trusting their favorite celebrity endorsing the product.

Mr. K V Thomas, said, “Daily we see top stars like Shahrukh Khan or Salman Khan or some other Hindi film star endorsing consumer items and they get huge payment for endorsement. Hence CCPC have decided that even the celebrities must pay compensation in case there is a complaint.”

While on one hand we observe Bollywood stars endorsing advertisements despite cases against them like few months back, Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Preity Zinta were slapped with notices by the Tamil Nadu consumer forum for promoting Maggi noodles on "false representations" about quality and safety.

On the other, if we look down South film Industry we observe that many popular film stars have made it a rule not to endorse any product knowing very well that their word is taken as a ‘word of God’ by their fans. Hence in case the product proves bogus than their dignity and decorum is at stake.

South Cinema’s greatest superstars viz. Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth have thus stayed away from endorsements. Nevertheless the two have always come forward for advertisements that promote social cause.

Another big name in South Cinema Thala Ajith too has made it a practice not to endorse any product that is harmful to health and has hence turned down offers from Coke and other beverages, despite offers of huge remunerations.

However recently the media is hype about film star Kamal Haasan breaking his 50 year long vow of not endorsing products and will be doing a commercial for Pothys, regarded as a leading chain of textile and jewellery showrooms in Tamil Nadu.

When contracted sources close to Kamal Haasan revealed, “The endorsement should not be perceived in wrong intention because Kamal sir has decided to do the advertisement to help the AIDS Patients.”

“The entire sum of money received from the endorsement will be donated for welfare of AIDS patients, particularly the innocent kids who are suffering due to the deadly virus,” he quipped.

Truly an eye-opener for Bollywood star, who despite getting hefty amount from the film assignment, run after more money endorsing products caring a damn, whether it harms or cons the innocent consumers!!!

Did Sex Bomb Silk Smitha contempt the legendary actor and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.G. Ramchandran?

South actress Silk Smitha was a renowned vamp, seductress and the lady, who dared to bare! She ruled the 80’s with glamour and was a craze among film goers in South India. With SADMA, she became familiar to Hindi audiences. September 23 marks her birthday; Raaga.Com remembers the Sex Bomb and clarifies an infamous misconception about the sizzling actress.

In an interview to a renowned national magazine Silk Smitha was asked few harsh questions which targeted her haughty, unsocial and arrogant attitude, however the actress gave the answers so as to clear the misconceptions spread by few scandalous film magazines.

On being quizzed about the infamous episode when she dared to contempt the legendary actor and much admired Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.G. Ramchandran by ignoring his invitation and boycotted a public function, she said, “Yes it is true I did not attend the function and the media had a great time fabricating stories against me.”

Explaining the reason for not attending the function she said, “An invitation by our honorable Chief Minister M.G. Ramchandran sir was an event that I could not even dream to boycott.”

She informed, “As I prepared with enthusiasm and was eager to attend the function I was suddenly broken down by a phone call.”

“My film producer called me and asked me to cancel all my assignments for the day and report for shooting urgently as the film’s hero, superstar Chiranjeevi, was leaving abroad the same evening. All my aspirations to attend the Chief Minister’s function were dazed and I was compelled to skip Shri M.G.R’s sir public event and rush for the film’s shooting,” she lamented.

Bollywood’s iconic actor Ranbir Kapoor booked in ‘Cheating and Conning Case!’

In a startling case Bollywood’s iconic actor Ranbir Kapoor has been booked in ‘Cheating and Conning Case’ in Mumbai. Besides Ranbir Kapoor, actor-director Farhan Akhtar too has also been booked in a criminal breach of trust and forgery case for promoting an online shopping site which is allegedly ‘duping’ customers.

The Madiyaon police station (about 10 km from in Mumbai) informed media that a F.I.R. has been registered against both actors Ranbir Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar for promoting a portal askmebazaar.com that is allegedly conning consumers by collecting money for them but not delivering the promised product.

The F.I.R. has been lodged by a lawyer Rajat Bansal who has complaint that his client a resident of Keshav Nagar, has been duped by the portal of Rs 30,000/-. According to the police Rajat Bansal’s client had ordered a 40-inch LED TV from the portal after being influenced by the actors Ranbir Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar’s effective promotion. He paid Rs 29,999 by debit card but despite waiting for 10 days he did not get the promised LCD TV.

The police have booked Ranbir Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar under IPC sections 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 420 (forgery) on September 19,2015.

Besides Ranbir Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar, the police have also booked directors of online askmebazaar.com - portal Sanjiv Gupta, Anand Sonbhadra, Piyush Pankaj, Kiran Kumar Sriniwas Murti and marketing officer Puja Goyal. Bansal.

It may be noted that this is not the first time when film stars have come under scanner for promoting products that have conned people into beveling their sweet talks and falling prey to them. Remember Madhuri Dixit becoming victim of FDA for promoting Maggi Noodles.
