Priya Banerjee - Yet another South Actress enters Bollywood

After Asin, Ileana D’Cruz, Shruti Haasan the new South Indian beauty to join Bollywood is Priya Banerjee, who after her stint in Tamil and Telugu films is making her foray in Bollywood opposite none other than Bollywood top actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Sanjay Gupta’s much publicized film JAZBAA.

Sanjay Gupta briefing the media about introducing Priya Banerjee in Bollywood said, “I was looking out for a new heroine with a foreign upbringing. Incidentally somebody gave me a video of Priya’s Tamil film and I was floored as she fitted the role to a perfect ‘T’.”

“Soon after watching the film I asked my casting director to trace the actress and confirm that she hasn't signed any other Hindi film, we auditioned her, and she was impressive. She is a fine actor and plays an important role in the film", informed Gupta.

Born and brought up in Canada, Priya Banerjee has the distinction of being Miss Photogenic at the Miss World Canada in 2011. Since her childhood she aspired to be an actress. Hence she also got herself trained in Kathak and Rabindra Sangeet(classical music) in Canada and even did many stage performances in Canada.

A graduate in International marketing and computer science, Priya Banerjee moved to Mumbai in 2012 and enrolled herself at Anupam Kher’s acting institute called ‘Actor Prepares’, regarded as India’s finest acting school for talented aspiring actors.

In an interview Priya said, “I was fascinated with Indian films, I have grown up watching Bollywood cinema. I started with SHOLAY my all-time favourite.”

Speaking about her debut film she said, “After completing my acting course I had returned to Canada when a friend informed me that famous Telugu actor cum director Adivi Sesh was looking for a debutant actress hence I sent my video and got selected for the film KISS and rest is history.”

JAZBAA is the much publicized film not only because it is the comeback film of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, but the movie brings multiple talented actors from both commercial and art cinema like Irrfan Khan, Shabana Azmi, Atul Kulkarni, Anupam Kher along with Siddhanth Kapoor and John Abraham.

What’s Common between Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan?

Bollywood rivalry is common. Be it the rivalry between the Three Khan’s and as regards actresses Bollywood is famous for its axiom ‘Actresses can never be good friends’! Bollywood has a long list like Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor; Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma; Katrina Kaif and Sonakshi Sinha etc.

However an exceptional example was seen recently when actress Deepika Padukone bagged the Best Actress award for Happy New Year at the Screen Awards and graciously dedicated her award to the most deserving actress of the year viz. Kangana Ranaut, who is excellent in her movie QUEEN but incidentally has been ignored the honor till now.

While picking her Screen Best Actress Award Deepika Padukone, who is known for opening her heart out candidly confessed, “Thank you for this award, but I believe that this year belonged to Kangana. So, Kangana, this one’s for you.”

Deepika Padukone’s humane gesture takes one memory down lane to the year 1992 when Amiatbh Bachchan was awarded the Best Actor Filmfare Award for his marvelous performance of a gangster turned Good Samaritan in Mukul Anand’s HUM. However that year Sanjay Dutt had given his career’s most powerhouse performance in Lawrence D'Souza’s SAAJAN, starring Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, and Salman Khan

The highlight of the movie was that Sanjay Dutt, unlike is routine image of an action hero, played a tragic role of a handicapped poet, who secretly loves the heroine fearing her rejection being disabled. The movie was super hit not only for its song but the splendid performance of Sanjay Dutt

Hence when Amitabh Bachchan went up the dice to receive the award he dedicated the award to Sanjay and called him up on stage and himself handed his award to him.

So now you know what is common between Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone

The LGBT community is so much disturbed by this lewd scene that they have gheroed Shanker’s residence and held protest demanding deletion of this objectionable scene from the movie. In addition the communities both in Chennai and Hyderabad have field cases against Shankar and producers of ‘I’ for defaming their community

Aggravated by the menace of the LGBT community Shanker has sought police protection and is in a tight corner. A source close to Shanker confirmed the news.

The issue has got momentum with the popular transgender TV personality Rose Venkatesan condemning Shanker for belittling the LGBT community.

Rose has sought the support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and LGBT community (LGBT) and plans to exploit the issue. Rose added, "The way Shankar has portrayed Ojas's character makes us look like some sex-starved individuals. We are in talks with the members of LGBT community to decide the next course of action.”

Interestingly while the LGBT community is making hue and cry over the scene readers would be surprised to know that Ojas M. Rajani, the actor who has played the LGBT character in the film, himself is a LGBT and has no complaints about the portrayal.

Briefing media, Rajani said, “Though I have not seen the movie but I am sure Shankar sir would have not done anything that would hurt the sentiments of the LGBT community.”

It may be noted that both Shankar and Ojas M. Rajani, who is a make-up artist, share a healthy relation. They have worked together in six films and Shaker has great trust in his abilities as a potential makeup artist.
