The charisma and the menace of Daku Gabbar Singh, played so effectively by debutant actor Amjad Khan in the movie SHOLAY (1975) has been such mesmerizing that for the first time in the history of Indian Cinema a movie was thronged by cine buffs repeatedly not to see the dashing hero or its sexy heroine but a villain!
Today almost 40 years later the fascination of the deadly Gabbar Singh continues to inspire actors and they aspire to re-live Gabbar Singh on silver screen. Recently at the promotional event for Hindi version of Shankar's I, Southern superstar, Vikram expressed his desire to portray Gabbar Singh in a film. He said, “I would love to play Gabbar Singh. I think it was a kickass character.”
Vikram who plays a verity of roles in the movie ‘I’ informed the media that he has worked hard for over three years to get into the skin of the various characters. He said, “I had to beef up my muscles for the body builder role and lose 25 kgs for another role. But the most difficult was portraying the beast man.”
Coming back to Gabbar Singh, the role was originally written by writer pair Salim Javed for ace villain Danny but he got busy with his assignment in Afghanistan for Feroz Khan’s movie DHARMATMA, hence director Ramesh Sippy had to hunt for a new actor.
Ramesh Sippy in an interview said, “After Danny backed out of the film there was a great passion among my key actors viz. Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan to play the role of Gabbar Singh because of its alluring characterization. But since each one had been cast in their respective roles hence I searched for a new talent and was successful in getting Amjad Khan, who lived the character splendidly.”
