In an interview Sanjay Leela Bhansali has broken his silence about the cold war that has been prevailing between the two famous celebrities since long.
Responding to a direct question by an eminent journalist as to what went wrong between him and Salman Khan, Bhansali candidly replied, “Actually Salman Khan and I share a cordial relationship. We have done three films together viz. KHAMOSHI THE MUSICAL, HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM and SAAWARIYA.”
“Hence during the making of these films we came so close that Salman began expecting a lot from me, forgetting that when I make a movie I have my own vision and particular actors in mind. As a filmmaker I expect to do movies that touch my soul. That give me personnel solace to quench my thirst for my creative thirst,” he reasoned.
He added, “Hence when I announced DEVDAS, Salman Khan was excepting me to cast him in the lead. But when I announced Shah Rukh Khan’s name instead of him, Salman Khan was probably hurt.”
Sanjay Leena Bhansali clarifies, “There was no personnel grudge against Salman Khan that I opted for Shah Rukh Khan. The main reason why I selected Shah Rukh to play DEVDAS was that he is a competent actor and has a better conviction in doing emotional roles.”
“But unfortunately Salman Khan misunderstood or was perhaps poisoned by his colleagues against me. Whatever may be the reason, for when I started BAJIRAO MASTANI, I was convinced Salman Khan was the right actor to do justice to the Peshwa Sardar but tragically Salman Khan declined the role and I was compelled to select Ranveer Singh,” he concludes.
