Shammi Kapoor and his penchant for music

The name Shammi Kapoor pops up mesmerizing tuneful songs like O Hasina Zulfon Wali....; Badan Pe Sitare Lapete Hue....; Yeh Chand sa Roshan...; Isharon Isharon Mein Dil Lene Wale.... The list is endless. 

October 21 marks the birth anniversary of the legendary actor Shammi Kapoor, who ruled the 60’s as the undisputed king of melodious music. Raaga.Com pays homage to the great actor and investigates why music was so popular in Shammi Kapoor’s film. 

Believe it or not but Shammi Kapoor had a penchant for music and had ear for quality music was so perfect that each song in his film was a guaranteed hit!


In fact in an interview Shanker (of the famous Shanker Jaikishen music director fame) informed that Shammi Kapoor had learnt classical music for five years and that was the secret for his ear for melodious music. 

Shanker, who began his career at Prithvi Theatres, was acquainted with Shammi Kapoor from the days when Shammi Kapoor was a young lad. Shammi Kapoor would often participate in the rehearsals of drama and music sittings at Prithvi Theatres, which was owned by his father, the renowned actor Prithviraj Kapoor. 

Speaking about Shammi’s passion for music Shanker said, “Actually papaji (Prithviraj Kapoor) had hired revered Hindustani Classical music guru Pandit Jagannath Prasad as the music teacher for his elder son Raj Kapoor but when he got busy with his schedules in films young Shammi Kapoor insisted his mother to request his father to let him learn music. His father obliged. Shammi was barely 12 years old then.” 

It was this training in classical music that proved miraculous for the success of his films because more than the scripts it was the music of Shammi Kapoor’s films that did wonders. Film buffs went crazy over the songs and would watch the movies repeatedly multiple times thus making his films hit.
