Music in Indian Cinema has always been pivotal. There was an era when having minimum 9 to 10 songs in a movie was customary. In fact in the 30’s a film called INDRASABHA had 70 songs! The 50’s and 60’s witnessed music at its peak. That the reason the period is termed as Golden Era, particularly for its marvelous songs. In fact music is given so much importance in Bollywood that the film crew travels to different locations just for shooting a single song!
The year 2015 is yet again reviving the similar era of music back with multiple movies in pipeline that have broken the contemporary tradition of three or four songs to a maximum 8 to 9 songs.
The first in this trend is celebrated filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s MIRZIYA, which has … Hold your breath 400 hours of recorded music! The love story revives the legendary film maker Chetan Anand’s HEER RANJHA style, where the lovers converse in song and poetry. The movie has music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and lyrics by Oscar award winner Gulzaar.
Anurag Basu known for his weird imagination is recreating the Golden Era of the Indian Music in his movie JAGGA JASOOS staring the hot and sensational Jodi of Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. The movie will have plenty of songs as the love birds would burst into songs in their everyday affairs something similar to songs like Mannu, tera kya hoga in Chalti Ka Naam Gadi and Achcha toh hum chalte hain in Aan Milo Sajna?
Music director Pritam has composed the music in a typical a Broadway musical fashion, where there is a song for every occasion.
Next in pipeline is Sooraj Barjatya with Salman Khan in PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO. Sooraj in the tradition of Rajshri tradition of family drama has incorporated nine songs a la HUM SAATH SAATH HAIN AND VIVAH pattern.
The movie has music by Salman Khan favorite Himesh Reshammiya.
Salman Khan will be teaming up for the first time Mozart of Madras, A.R. Rahman in his forthcoming movie BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN. Directed by Salman’s favorite Kabir Khan, the movie is pure musical with Salman and Kareena singing as many as 7 to 8 songs.
And last but the least Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the man known for his music sense is giving a new lease of life to the Indian semi classical music which ruled in the 50’s and 60’s in his movie BAJIRAO MASTANI, staring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. The music has been composed by Bansali himself as he did for GUZAARISH and GOLIYON KI RAASLILA RAM-LEELA.
