After Mehmood, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzar, Basu Chatterjee and David Dhawan the filmmaker who has given a new lease of life to Comedy in Bollywood is none other than South Sensational filmmaker Priyadarshan. With HERA PHERI he flooded Bollywood with many super hit comedies like MALAMAAL WEEKLY, HULCHUL, MUSKURAHAT, KHATTA MEETHA, HUNGAMA, GARAM MASALA etc
January 30, marks the birthday of the genius filmmaker; Raaga.Com wishes him birthday greetings.
Comedies in Bollywood is a hard nut to crack due to its less demand over romance and action nevertheless whenever a great comedy has been made like CHALTI KA NAAM GAADI, PYAR KIYE JAA, PADOSAN, ANGOOR, CHUPKE CHUPKE, BOMBAY TO GOA, GOLMAAL, SHAUKEEN, ANDAAZ APNA APNA, etc. people have applauded it. However in 1990 when the Khan Trilogy viz. Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh ruled the roost comedy got a major setback and it was south’s marvelous filmmaker Priyadarshan reviewing it with a bang in the year 2000 with HERA PHERI.
Thus Priyadarshan’s shoe string budget comedy, ‘HERA PHERI’ doing mind blowing business, it opened flood gates for comedies like DULHAN HUM LE JAYEENGE, CHAL MERE BHAI, MELA , HADH KAR DI AAPNE. JORU KA GULAM, KUNWARA etc. however, none had the magic of Priyadarshan and the poor response to these movies restrained film makers from burning their hands as a result release of comedies in 2001and 2002 nosedived.
What came as a shock was that the usually consistent and the ‘Baap of comedies’, David Dhawan too, couldn’t escape the spate of flops as he came down trembling with a string of flops like ANARI NO. 1, AUNTY NO. 1, DULHAN HUM LE JAYEENGE ETC. Even his lucky mascots Govinda and Sanjay Dutt could not save him in his next movie EK AUR EK GYARAH.
However, it was once again master of comedy Priyadarshan, who with his movie HUNGAMA opened new vistas for comedies.
One prays the trend continues – after all – Hasna zaroori hain!!!
