Readers would be enlightened to know that Vyjayanthimala was South India’s ‘First actress’ to invade Bollywood and establish her authority as an actress par excellence. Thus paving way for other South Indian actress to conquer Bollywood and attain National stardom.

Vyjayanthimala besides being a competent actress was an ace dancer and it was she who gave a new identity classical dance form like Bharathanatyam in Bollywood

She ruled the 50’s and 60’s as the highest paid actress and featured opposite great actors like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. Her performance as the rustic rural lass in GUNGA JUMANA is still regarded as her best performance, particularly because despite being a South Indian, she spoke the Bhojpuri (North Indian) dialect effortlessly.

While Vyjayanthimala dominated the 50’s and 60’s; Sridevi ruled the roost during the 80’s and 90’s. Though she made a flop start with SOLVA SAWAN (1978) in Bollywood but it was five years later with HIMMATWALA (1983), a remake of a Telugu film OORIKI MONAGADU, she hit the bull’s eye. Sridevi’s hot thighs show in swimsuit in the movie HIMMATWALA made the film buffs go crazy. She later appeared in a string of commercially successful movies as a glamour doll in movies like MAWAALI (1983), TOHFA (1984), MASTERJI (1985), KARMA (1986) etc.

However Sridevi was more than a sex symbol. She proved her versatility as an actress par excellence in SADMA (1983), NAGINA (1986), MR. INDIA (1987), CHANDNI (1989), CHAALBAAZ (1989), LAMHE (1991), KHUDA GAWAH (1992), GUMRAH (1993), LAADLA (1994), JUDAAI (1997)etc.

Critics were tight lipped at her versatility. She not only won five Filmfare Awards (including a Filmfare Special Award) but even the Government of India awarded her Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor.
