Zohra Sehgal, the grand old actress of India passed away at the ripe age of 102. Raaga.Com pays her a humble homage and prays her soul rests peacefully in heaven.
Winner of Indian government’s most prestigious civilian awards Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, Zohra Sehgal, had became a household name after the success of her exciting role of a dominating mother of Amitabh Bachchan in CHEENI KUM.
However readers will be surprised to know that Zohra Sehgal began her career in the mid 40’s with legendary filmmakers like Khwaja Ahmad Abbas in DHARTI KE LAL and Chetan Anand's NEECHA NAGAR, but Zohra could not create the magic at box office hence after few more films she discarded Bollywood in early 60’s.
She went to London, where she fortunately won a drama scholarship in 1962. Luckily in 1963 she got the opportunity to work as a dance teacher at 'Uday Shankar Style’ – dance school in Chelsea, in central London.
Soon she began getting roles on British television. Her first role was in BBC TV series 'The Rescue of Pluffles' in 1964. Later she won more fame and recognition with her roles in BBC TV serials like The Raj Quartet, The Jewel in the Crown, Tandoori Nights, My Beautiful Laundrette, et al.
She came back to India in 90’s and was approached by film maker Mani Ratnam for his movie DIL SE thus opening floodgates for many more roles like HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM, VEER-ZAARA, CHEENI KUM, SAAWARIYA.
In an interview Zohra Sehgal, said, “ Though I am be old but I am passionate about life and love doing life full of energy, like I did in Govinda starrer CHALO ISHQ LADAAYE, in which I even drew a bike and did action packed scenes. Also I enjoyed CHEENI KUM.”
