Hum Intezaar Karenge Tera Qayaamat Tak – Part –II

Remembering music director Roshan

In the last issue you read about music director Roshan’s first tryst with success in BAWRE NAIN, however it was BARSAAT KI RAAT released in 1960 that established Roshan to prove his mettle as a music director par excellence.

Directed by P. L. Santoshi the movie BARSAAT KI RAAT was a Muslim drama and the protagonist a poet. Hence the movie had great scope of music. Thus P. L. Santoshi roped in Sahir Ludhyanvi, the most successful lyrist of the era and chose music director Roshan to compose the music. The movie stared Madhubala and Bharat Bhushan and was a big budget movie. It was a great opportunity for Roshan to excel. He pumped all his energy and the result was fabulous. All the songs were super hit. Remember the title track Zindagi bhar nahi bhoolegi… and Maine shayad tumhe pehle bhi kahin dekha hai….. . The superlative classical number Garjat barsat sawan aayo re…. sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Kamal Barot is still a favorite song during the romantic monsoon session and last but not the least Lata Mangeshkar Mujhe mil gaya bahana teri…

However the highpoint of the movie were its excellent qawwalis, particularly Yeh ishq ishq hai…the 12 minute marathon opened doors for qawwalis in Bollywood. The other hit qawwalis of the movie include Nigah-e-naaz pe maron ka haal kya hoga… and Pehchanta hoon khoob tumhari...

The ice on the crème was that Roshan proved his excellence over his contemporaries by registering his song Zindagi bhar nahi bhoolegi… topping in the prestigious Binaca Geet Mala hit parade. The year was packed with tough competition by Naushad in MUGHAL-E-AZAM, music director Ravi in CHAUDHVIN KA CHAND, Shankar Jaikishan in DIL APNA AUR PREET PARAI and Kalyanji Anandji in CHHALIA.

However despite such a fantastic music Roshan was declined the esteemed Filmfare award. Readers would be surprised to know Roshan was not even nominated in the Best music director category. Critics made a cry that Roshan deserved at least a nomination but Roshan gave no heed. He proved his brilliance in his next movie TAJ MAHAL, starring Pradeep Kumar and Bina Rai. Once agin it was the unique combination of Sahir and Roshan. Each song is a pearl. Remember Jo wada kiya woh nibhana padega… and even better, Paon choo lene do phoolon ko inayat hogi... Jo baat tujhme hai teri tasveer me nahi...

Besides these Mohd. Rafi classics who can forget the Lata masterpieces Jurme ulfat pe hume log saza dete hain… and Khudaye bartar teri zameen par… and the Roshan specialty the brilliant qawwali Chandi sa badan sone ki name…

With TAJ MAHAL yet again Roshan established his supremacy by occupying the Binaca Geetmala Hit parade top position and compelled Filmfare Awards to salute his talent by winning the Best Music Director Award.

After this Roshan gave many hits but unfortunately due to heart attack he died young at the age of 50 on 16 November 1967. A music director of his caliber is born once in a blue moon and music lovers will always remember him. As a befitting tribute I remember his song….

Hum intezaar karenge tera qayaamat tak

Khuda kare ke qayaamat ho aur tu aaye
