Recalling his early days with his father Rajesh Roshan in an interview said, “I was around nine years when papa expired due to heart ailment but  I vividly remember eminent film personalities thronging our house like  Geetaji (Bali), Shammiji (Kapoor) and Dharmendraji often came over.” He adds, “I remember when Papa was composing the famous qawwali Yeh ishq ishq hai (BARSAAT KI RAAT) along with Sahirji. I used to play around and papa would ask me to sit and listen to the composition and sometimes even ask my opinion too!”

He informed, “In fact Rakesh dada (RakeshRoshan) was also interested in music and papa had bought him a mandolin but as he grew he moved towards acting as he was strikingly handsome.”

With the success of KUNWARA BAAP Rajesh Roshan made his presence felt in Bollywood. However in the 70’s when Laxmikant Payrelal, R.D.Burman, Kalyanji Anandji were dominating the scene it was not a cake walk for the young music director to establish himself. Hence despite the success of the multi starrer KUNWARA BAAP, Rajesh Roshan did not receive any big starrer movie. Instead he was offered B. Nagi Reddi’s love story JULIE staring two new debutants.

The movie was an acid test for Rajesh Roshan and the young music director proved his credentials by scoring a super hit music. All the songs of the movie were super hit and Bhool gaya sab kuchh … coming at third position in the prestigious Binaca Geet Mala. To add ice to the cake he went on to win the high esteemed Filmfare Best Music director award out beating great legends like ShankarJaikishan in SANYASI; Laxmikant-Pyarelal in DULHAN and R.D. Burman who was nominated for two movies viz. KHEL KHEL MEIN and SHOLAY.

A film critic praising Rajesh Roshan’s superlative music in his review wrote the high point of the music is that Rajesh Roshan has exploited his talent to the fullest displaying his mastery at romantic songs Bhool gaya sab kuchh…, western music the hit number My Heart is beating… and the devotional bhajan Saancha Naam Tera, Tu shyam mera….
