As we step into the last month of the year, it is
time for some Sufi Celebration. The genre by itself is used to depict
ultimate devotion and the lyrics usually used infuse a feeling of
surrender by the singer to the Almighty.
Way back in 2000, the movie 'Fiza' made an impact
amongst the audience for the wonderful Sufi rendition. With the music
maestro composing "Piya Haji Ali", it is needless to say, the song did
turn aside a listener's attention to this different genre of music. The
Mozart of Madras is the brain behind wonderful Sufi songs like the
recent "Kun Faya Kun" from the movie 'Rockstar' and "Khwaja mere Khwaja"
from 'Jodha Akbar'. Be it a listener of any religion, he will
definitely love these two songs as the devotion expressed through these
songs appeals to anyone and definitely traverses him to the Islamic era.
Other simple yet outstanding Sufi compositions by Rahman include
"Arziyaan- Maula Maula" from 'Delhi 6' and Meherbaan from the movie
'Ada'. The song 'Mitwa' from 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' also follows the
rules of a Sufi song and can be categorized as one.
Coming to other artists, Kailash Kher is yet another
popular face in the Sufi scenario. His 'Teri Deewani' topped the charts
in 2008. His rendition of "Allah ke bande haste" in the movie Waisa Bhi Hota Hai is another one of a kind Sufi song. 'Ya Rabba' from Salam e-
ishq is another composition with brilliant vocals from the same singer.
'Bulla ki Jaana mein kaun' by Rabbi Shergill caught
the attention of many in 2006 for the soulful rendition. Other singers
like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan also have contributed for the Sufi genre. One
example would be 'Saaiyaan' from the movie Heroine.
A genre loved by many, a genre that has made some
songs addictive, a genre that provides scope for many to explore its
various nuances, a genre that has conquered Bollywood with many hits,
ofcourse the genre of 'Sufi music' has emerged soulful for many.
